VDOE Opioid Abatement Education Program This program was developed to support K-12 teachers with instruction on opioid misuse through evidence-based education and prevention programming that supports the 2020 Health Standards of Learning. The use of the Botvin Lifeskills program in classrooms to support instruction on opioid misuse and prevention is free to school divisions. Stipends are available to educators who complete training program and implement it in their classrooms. 2025 National Civics Bee Encourage your 6th-8th grade students to participate in the 2025 National Civics Bee! In collaboration with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Colonial Williamsburg, and VA250 Educational programming, Virginia will participate in the 2025 National Civics Bee. Students in grades 6-8 may complete and submit an essay using the online application portal. Application deadline is Feb 4. Learn more from the National Civics Bee.
Project HOPE-Virginia New Professional Development Resources Project HOPE-Virginia offers a Learning Library with new professional development resources that highlight best practices for teachers across the state on how to identify students experiencing homelessness to connect them with services. The webpage includes videos, tip sheets and more to support training on the McKinney-Vento Act and the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness.
VDOE Dual Language/Immersion Resource Writing Committee This committee, led by VDOE staff from the Office of Humanities, will develop a technical assistance document on Literacy and Biliteracy in Dual Language Programs. The document will include a literature review, background on the Virginia Literacy Act, guidance on literacy for diverse populations, and answers to frequently asked questions. Applicants should be educators with knowledge of dual language programs and literacy development. Applications are due by Feb. 6 and requires a professional reference and supervisor approval. Selection notification by Feb. 10.
Elie Wiesel Student Competition Each year, the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater sponsors the Elie Wiesel Competitions. There are opportunities for middle school and high school students to compete for prizes for writing, visual arts and video. All submissions must be made by February 3. VMFA Virtual Teacher Workshop: In the Galleries K-12 educations are invited to virtually visit VMFA’s galleries on February 4 from 6-7pm to share ideas about the instructional potential of Mississauga Ojibwe and African American Artist Edmonia Lewis’s important 19th-century sculpture Hiawatha's Marriage. Join VMFA and guest presenters to take a closer look at Lewis’s sculpture and learn about her artistic approach. Zoom registration is required for this free virtual workshop.

2025 Teacher Institute at Jamestown Settlement Join fellow classroom educators at Jamestown Settlement this free summer Institute. Through hands-on learning activities and presentations, participants will gain a deeper understanding of early Virginia history. Participants will be provided the tools, strategies, and some reproduction artifacts that will help them bring history to life. Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project The YADAPP is a year-long leadership program for high school students to address underage substance use through the development and implementation of a strategic prevention plan. The program kicks off this year with a week-long conference at Christopher Newport University, July 14-18. Teams of 4 student leaders and 1 Adult Sponsor attend the conference and attend sessions, trainings and keynotes that all lead to the development of their Strategies To Act Now (STAN) Plan. Registration is open from April 1 – June 1.
2025 Chesapeake Bay Climate Institute The Virginia Geographic Alliance and Maryland Geographic Alliance are offering a three-day institute that is open to K-12 teachers. It will be held at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Wachapreague. The institute includes a field excursion to Tangier Island, expert-led sessions, and understanding the science of climate change. Two options are offered: July 20 - 23 or July 23 - July 26. Pathways for Authentic Teaching of Health Sciences Institute Applications are now open for the 2025 PATHS Institute for secondary teachers, focusing on innovative health sciences curricula and career pathways. Cohort 3 starts in Summer 2025 with a 5-day hybrid professional development program It includes virtual sessions on June 18 and July 11 and in-person training in Richmond from July 7-9. Developing and Expanding Coaching Strategies Join VaSCL for Developing and Expanding Coaching Strategies workshop. Suggested audience includes K-12 Instructional Coaches, teacher leaders, and administrators to learn coaching skills by applying them to real scenarios and understand how avoid the common pitfalls of coaching. Co-facilitators include Tony Borash, Debbie Collins, and Craig Dommer who have built and sustained a systemic coaching model at the division, state, and national level. This onsite workshop is scheduled at the Albemarle Center 1 PD Space on February 18.
STEM Teacher Leadership Academy This free week-long professional development experience is offered by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Washington D.C., July 28-August 1. It connects educators with subject matter experts and introduces the basics of basic science research within AFOSR. Applications are accepted from licensed, practicing K-12 educators with educators from Title I schools prioritized in the selection process. Applications are due by February 28.

Advancing Your Education Join George Mason University for three info sessions. Attendees receive an application fee waiver: 1. M.Ed. in Physical Education info session on February 4. Mason’s Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning program offers Online Master’s degree and certificate program for practicing educators. 2. Elementary Education info session on February 10. Mason’s ELED program supports students or current teachers pursuing or fulfilling licensure requirements for grades PK-6. 3. Secondary Education info session on February 12 or March 5.
