Virginia Kindness Week & Webinar-February 9-15
Kindness Week aims to highlight the significance of everyday acts of kindness, which contribute to making our schools, communities, and state more compassionate, secure, healthy, and welcoming environments.  For schools interested in participating in Kindness Week, a variety of resources and activities including a Digital Badge are available from VDOE.

Project HOPE-Virginia New Professional Development Resources
Project HOPE-Virginia offers a Learning Library with new professional development resources that highlight best practices for teachers across the state on how to identify students experiencing homelessness to connect them with services.  The webpage includes videos, tip sheets and more to support training on the McKinney-Vento Act and the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness.

GWLA Selection Committee - Call for Applicants
VDOE is seeking applications to serve on the Governor's World Language Academies Student Selection Committee for the French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Japanese Academies. Proficiency in the target language is preferred but not required. Applicants should be teachers, content specialists, or other educators who are knowledgeable about the Academies. Meetings will be held March 12-14 in the Williamsburg or Richmond area.  Applications are due by January 25.           

Elie Wiesel Student Competition
Each year, the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater sponsors the Elie Wiesel Competitions. There are opportunities for middle school and high school students to compete for prizes for writing, visual arts and video. All submissions must be made by February 3. Information is available in the guidebook.

Multilingual Learners 101 Workshop -February 4
In this one-day interactive SURN workshop, educators will explore how multilingual learners acquire social and academic language and literacy. This workshop will be held at William & Mary's School of Education. Learn more or register today!

VAASL Regional School Librarians of the Year
VAASL is currently seeking nominees for Regional Librarian of the Year. The application is a self-nominating process, but if you know of a school librarian that does amazing things in their school, encourage them to apply. Applications due by January 31.

VMFA Virtual Teacher Workshop: In the Galleries
K-12 educations are invited to virtually visit VMFA’s galleries on February 4 from 6-7pm to share ideas about the instructional potential of Mississauga Ojibwe and African American Artist Edmonia Lewis’s important 19th-century sculpture Hiawatha's Marriage. Join VMFA and guest presenters to take a closer look at Lewis’s sculpture and learn about her artistic approach. Zoom registration is required for this free virtual workshop.

2025 National Civics Bee
In collaboration with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Colonial Williamsburg, and VA250 Educational programming, Virginia will participate in the 2025 National Civics Bee.  Students in grades 6-8 may complete and submit an essay using the online application portal. Application deadline is Feb 4. Learn more from the National Civics Bee.

2025 VITAL Conference- Feb. 6 & 8
Registration is now open for Virginia Innovative Teaching and Leadership Conference, Virtual Virginia’s free, online annual professional learning conference. The event highlights Virginia educators and leaders who support educational innovations in classrooms, schools, and divisions. Register today!

VAASL Regional Conferences
The Virginia Association of School Librarians are hosting one day regional conference in February and March all over the state of Virginia. These one day professional development conference are designed to provide professional development to school librarians close to their home school divisions. Learn more today!

ActiVAtED Learning Podcast: Season 2  
Season 2 of ActiVAtED Learning, a podcast hosted by Tom Landon, Director of Educational Innovation for Blue Ridge PBS, is now available. Participants will hear educator stories of innovative technology use in the classroom. Discussions will be held with national leaders in blended learning, award-winning teachers, librarians, and special guests from VDOE and VSTE. Starting January 8, new episodes will be released every two weeks.

Maker Mindset Conference
The University of Mary Washington is excited to host the third Maker Mindset Conference on February 1 on the Fredericksburg Campus of UMW. This conference will offer interactive sessions for local K-12 educators and future educators providing best-practices and examples of how to integrate the maker mindset into everyday lessons.  Registration closes on January 31.

Alcohol Education and Prevention Grants
The Virginia ABC Alcohol Education and Prevention Grant Application opened on January 1.  Grant applicants can apply for up to $10,000 in funding for an initiative that must address one or more of the following priorities: underage drinking prevention, prevention or high-risk drinking prevention. Applications are due by 5pm on March 1.

Revolutionary Reflections: Free Workshop for Virginia Teachers
This free workshop will take place on February 8 at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Participants will learn about the Marquis de Lafayette and his focus on empowering women, free and enslaved Black Americans, American Indians, and more.  Learn more or register today.

2025-26 UAS Educator Institute
This project will develop instructional materials and provide hands-on professional development and mentoring to educators. Based on NASA and industry input, VSGC and partners will provide support to a two-year cohort of educators including high school teachers. More information can be found on the VSGC site.

STEM Teacher Leadership Academy
This free week-long professional development experience is offered by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Washington D.C., July 28-August 1. It connects educators with subject matter experts and introduces the basics of basic science research within AFOSR. Applications are accepted from licensed, practicing K-12 educators with educators from Title I schools prioritized in the selection process. Applications are due by February 28.

Production Grant
CareerViewXR is seeking remarkable education and industry partnerships to expand their library. Grant awardees will receive a 1-year CareerViewXR subscription for their organization, two VR headsets, and a field trip. Application deadline is March 15.

Pathways for Authentic Teaching of Health Sciences Institute
Applications are now open for the 2025 PATHS Institute for secondary teachers, focusing on innovative health sciences curricula and career pathways. Cohort 3 starts in Summer 2025 with a 5-day hybrid professional development program It includes virtual sessions on June 18 and July 11 and in-person training in Richmond from July 7-9. Space is limited to 20 teachers so register today or contact Elizabeth Edmonson with questions.

Immersive Career Exploration PD Course Feb 6 & 8
In this graduate-level professional development course offered by CareerViewXR, teachers, counselors, and other professionals will learn how to use virtual reality and web-based experiences to help students and adults with career exploration. Master of Teaching Approved Licensure Programs Information Session
The University of Virginia's School of Education and Human Development is offering an information session to learn more about the in-person Master of Teaching programs (Elementary Ed., Secondary Ed., ESL, Special Ed. General Curriculum). Registration is required for the UVA virtually info session on January 21 at 7:30 p.m.
