Reminder: Teacher of the Year Applications-Due February 3 The deadline for the 2026 Mary V. Bicouvaris Virginia Teacher of the Year applications is quickly approaching—due by February 3. Superintendents (or designee) are encouraged to nominate one teacher for state-level recognition through the online 2026 Teacher of the Year Application portal. The selected division teacher representative will send an email through SM_APPLY to their Superintendent and Principal for confirmation. Completed applications, including their leadership confirmations, are due by February 3. Visit the VDOE Educator Awards and Recognition webpage and email questions to TeacheroftheYear@doe.virginia.gov.
VDOE and VLP Support Office Hours Office hours are jointly hosted by VDOE and VLP staff for division instructional leaders to ask questions about the VLA implementation and give feedback on implementation. Literacy Office Hours are offered bi-weekly and will be held on Monday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m. starting on January 6, 2025. Updated Zoom links will be sent to division instructional leaders who have been designated as such in Single Sign-on for Web Systems to register. Division literacy leaders can reach out to vla@doe.virginia.gov for more information on registration.
GWLA Selection Committee - Call for Applicants VDOE is seeking applications to serve on the Governor's World Language Academies Student Selection Committee for the French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Japanese Academies. Proficiency in the target language is preferred but not required. Applicants should be teachers, content specialists, or other educators who are knowledgeable about the Academies. Committee meetings will be held March 12-14 in the Williamsburg or Richmond area. This is a volunteer committee, and selected members will be reimbursed for travel expenses in accordance with state travel policy and guidelines. Applications are due to the VDOE by January 25.
WIDA Workshop Series On January 22 and February 4 the VDOE will be hosting a free virtual WIDA workshop series for Virginia K-12 educators who work with multilingual learners who are dually identified for language and disability. This virtual workshop series will take place from 4- 5:30 p.m. Participants will explore principles of Universal Design Learning and think about shared responsibility when planning for instruction. Registration is required and due by January 17.
VSTE Webinar The webinar, There’s an AI for That, will take place on January 9 at 6:30 p.m. Participants will share the latest apps and ideas for using new AI tools in the classroom. Participants are given three minutes max to demo their resource or tip. Then the audience will vote for the winner. Sign up for the #VSTEinAction Demo Slam or register to attend.
Call for Spring FLAVA Session Proposals Submit your session proposal by January 10 for the Spring 2025 FLAVA Conference, Charting New Horizons with Languages. This virtual conference will take place on April 26.
NASA’s Power to Explore Challenge Students K-12 are invited to research Radioisotope Power Systems, a type of nuclear “battery” used in space exploration, and dream up a new RPS-powered space mission to any moon in our solar system. Grand prize winners from each grade category will receive a trip for two to NASA’s Glenn Research Center to learn about the people and technologies that enable NASA missions. Submission deadline is January 31.
VMFA Talk: An Evening with Smarthistory Attend VMFA’s upcoming talk on January 31 from 6:30-8:30pm with the creators and stars of Smarthistory, Drs. Beth Harris and Steven Zucker, as they share stories behind their compelling content. Smarthistory is a hub for public art history with thousands of free videos and essays. Fresh Views of the American Revolution: Call for Student Artists Submissions Student artists are invited to answer the question “What does your America look like?" through two-dimensional artwork. This opportunity is in conjuncture with the upcoming ‘Fresh Views of the American Revolution’ exhibition scheduled to be held at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown October 2025 – May 2026. Submitted artwork must be delivered to the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and remain for the duration of the exhibition. Submissions due by March 14.
VEA Summit This annual Summit on Educators of Color will be held February 21-22 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump. The target audience includes local VEA affiliates, Pre-K-12 teachers, education support professionals and administrators, IHE faculty and students, HR personnel, local school boards, and community organizations. March Into Innovation Conference Inspire Loudoun invites all teachers across Northern Virginia to participate in the March into Innovation conference. It will be held on March 22 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Independence High School in Ashburn. To submit a proposal, complete call for proposal form, by February 14.
