TeacherTalk: December Edition
Avanti Yamamoto
Virginia Teacher of the Year

VDOE Logo

Thank you for all the love and effort you pour into your classrooms every day. Your dedication to your students and your craft is truly inspiring and it is an honor to teach beside all of you. I hope this holiday season brings you time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with your loved ones.

As we reflect and look ahead to the new year, I want to share some resources from Beyond the Bell on creating a sense of belonging in our schools. When students feel like they truly belong, they’re more confident, more engaged, and better prepared to learn. These relationships are the foundation of why our students return to the classroom each day, like regulars at their favorite cafe. Let’s remember that building strong relationships with students is about the small, consistent moments that show we care. Whether it’s taking a few extra minutes to listen, sharing a laugh, or encouraging them when they need it most, those moments add up to something powerful.

You are the heartbeat of education in Virginia, and the work you do matters so much. Wishing you all a happy, merry, and restful holiday season. Let’s come back in the new year ready to keep building those connections and making a difference, one student at a time.

In service,
Avanti
