Required Revisions in Special Education General Supervision and Monitoring from the United States Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs

The Virginia Department of Education has revised its monitoring of special education to implement required actions from the Differentiated Monitoring and Support Report from the United States Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). The agency has established and will continue to implement general supervision and monitoring policies, procedures, and practices that are designed to ensure local educational agencies meet the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) program requirements.

The Virginia Board of Education has revised the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia to ensure consistency with the requirements of the IDEA. Information regarding these revisions is available on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall. 2025 Youth and Family Summit

The 2025 I'm Determined Youth and Family Summit is a three-day event held in June and sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University. Youth with disabilities across the Commonwealth meet to network and discuss issues of importance to youth and young adults with disabilities. This year's theme and focus is Relatedness.

Parents will attend separate sessions built specifically for them, focusing on the same components and also bringing in awareness of resources and agencies available to families in Virginia. 

Date: June 10-12, 2025 (Tuesday evening - Thursday afternoon)

Location: Festival Conference and Student Center at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia

Attendees: This event is limited to 50 youth and families residing in Virginia.

Ages: Virginia youth with disabilities ages 14-18 (as of June 10, 2025) and accompanying parent(s)/guardian(s). There are no exceptions to the age requirement.
