Information about the quality and safety for more than 3,000 publicly funded early childhood sites across the Commonwealth is now available via the new VDOE online VQB5 portal.  This new tool helps families learn about the quality of the sites to help them choose the best option for their birth-to-five children. Virginia Quality Birth to Five is a nation-leading statewide quality measurement and improvement system providing information about child care, family child care, Head Start, and preschool. Statewide Access to New Teacher Support 
The REACH Virginia program is now accessible to all school divisions as a collaborative network of new teacher mentor program leaders from across the Commonwealth. Funded by the General Assembly through the VDOE, this initiative provides resources to support new teachers, opportunities for professional development, and no-cost membership in the network.  For more information or to join the program, email REACH Virginia Program Directors.

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Professional Development Teacher Opportunities
Join educators from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation for free one-hour online professional development opportunities. Each virtual session explores a different topic from Virginia’s past and connects it to future with ideas and resources for sharing the content in the classroom. Upcoming sessions include:
October 15: Teaching Through Time series with Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz from Stratford Hall Historic Preserve
October 17: History in the Books teacher book club where we’ll integrate social studies and literacy instruction by discussing juvenile literature for the classroom. 

WIDA Resource Hub
WIDA has provided a new reading with Multilingual Learners webpage. This resource hub offers research-based insights and practical tools to help leverage the strengths multilingual learners bring to the classroom, improving their reading comprehension and engagement. Check it out today!

National STEM Challenge
Students in grades 7-12 work on a STEM project that tackles a real-world challenge using scientific and engineering practices. Up to 150 National Champions will win a trip to the National STEM Festival in Washington, D.C., in March 2025. Deadline for entries is October 20.

Dyslexia Symposium at Virginia Commonwealth University
VCU Ruth Harris Professorship and Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), in partnership with the VDOE are hosting the Dyslexia Symposium on November 9, at 8:30 a.m. The Symposium is an opportunity to take a deep dive in learning about dyslexia and language disorders. There are options to attend in-person ($40), or virtually ($20). Register or visit the website for details.

NASA Student Opportunities
Check out the opportunities for your students. The due date for each application is October 26.
Virginia Space Coast Scholars is designed for high school sophomores and focuses on the science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.                
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars is an interactive on-line STEM learning experience, highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center, for high school junior and senior students.  
Virginia Earth System Science Scholars the program engages high school juniors and seniors in NASA’s satellite missions. Successful completion of the course is highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center. 

VCEE Fellowship Opportunity
Applications are now open for the Bronze Level Virginia Personal Finance Teacher Fellowship Program through Virginia Council on Economic Education. Educators in a school division in which 40% or more of the student population receive free or reduced lunch or 10% or more teachers are provisionally licensed, then this fellowship is your chance to make a difference. Apply by October 31.

Annual Educators Civics Summit 2024 -November 11
Registration is open now to join the Virginia Commission on Civics Education for their annual 2024 Virginia Civics Summit. The intended audience for the summit is division personnel and teachers who work with students in Civics and Economics and Virginia and the United States Government. The Civics Summit will provide lunch, materials, and parking for participants. Registration  will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.          

Virginia Junior Academy of Science
School membership registration for VJAS is free and now open for secondary school teachers who want their students to participate in a virtual long-term research project in STEM and related fields. Students will enter their authentic research experience into the VJAS juried science symposium hybrid event. Students may present in-person at Ferrum College or attend synchronously via Zoom, on May 31. Secondary science teachers interested in having a mentor work with your class need to register their schools by the January 15 deadline.  

VA250 Mobile Museum – Fall 2024
Bring the 250th Mobile Museum to your school and community!  A hands-on, interactive, and immersive “museum on wheels”, the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience titled “Out of Many, One” will be housed in a quad-expandable tractor trailer that will travel throughout Virginia and beyond, starting in Fall 2024.  Visit VA250 Mobile Experience for more information.

James Madison University is hosting two virtual information sessions for Master's-level programs in the month of October. These hour-long sessions are virtual:

Master’s in Education-Special Education
The UVA School of Education and Human Development is pleased to offer the Master’s in Education-Special Education program. This program is 100% online and asynchronous. Virginia educators may be eligible for a reduced tuition rate. Participants may choose: ABA, Special Education General Curriculum (add an endorsement) or Special Education Leadership.
