Join the Crunch Heard Round’ the Commonwealth Registration on October 10! The VDOE Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs is pleased to announce the eighth annual Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth will take place on October 10. Across the Commonwealth, we will make some noise for farm to school programs by taking a bite out of fresh, Virginia grown apples on the same day. To register for the event, download the free digital 2024 Crunch Toolkit, and complete the Crunch Registration Form. Participants are encouraged to share their celebrations on social media with the hashtags #VACrunch and #VAFarmtoSchool, and tag @VDOESCNP.

Suzee Leone Grant Opportunity for Counselors-Due October 4
Are you a school, private, or community counselor with an idea that will enrich the hearts and minds of those you serve? If so, the Suzee Leone Grant is available to help fund your idea! The submission deadline has been extended to October 4. The Virginia Counselors Association is accepting applications for grants up to $1000 for counseling related projects. Farm to School Week and Farm to School Month
October is National Farm to School Month and in Virginia, House Joint Resolution No. 692 (2015) designates the first full week in October as Virginia Farm to School Week. This year, Virginia Farm to School Week takes place October 7–11. The VDOE, Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs encourages school divisions, community sponsors, and community partners to celebrate Virginia Farm to School Week. There are countless ways to participate, including with seasonal foods feature on menus, poster contests, farm tours, taste tests, standards of learning-based lessons that feature Harvest of the Month crops, and the Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth.

VA250 Mobile Museum – Fall 2024
Bring the 250th Mobile Museum to your school and community!  A hands-on, interactive, and immersive “museum on wheels”, the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience titled “Out of Many, One” will be housed in a quad-expandable tractor trailer that will travel throughout Virginia and beyond, starting in Fall 2024.  Visit VA250 Mobile Experience for more information.

RISE Award Nominations 
There is still for
school divisions to nominate their candidate for the 2025 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award. The Award is intended to honor and elevate classified school employees who provide exemplary service to students. Statewide Access to New Teacher Support Program
The REACH Virginia program is now accessible to all school divisions as a collaborative network of new teacher mentor program leaders from across the Commonwealth. Funded by the General Assembly through the VDOE, this initiative provides resources to support new teachers, opportunities for professional development, and no-cost membership in the network.  For more information or to join the program, email REACH Virginia Program Directors.

58th Annual National Association of Pupil Services Administrators Conference
The NAPSA conference will be held October 20-23 at Drury Plaza Hotel, Richmond. It features an array of presenters who will provide invaluable information on the most pressing topics pupil services administrators are facing today. NAPSA membership consists of administrators with responsibilities that include special education, 504 services, health services, counseling, psychological services, social work, behavioral support, therapies, school safety, and other similar student needs. Longwood University Young Writers Competition
This is an annual contest for high school students in Virginia. This year's theme invites writers to explore all the various ways we can interpret the idea of “home.” Virginia students in Grades 9-12 are invited to enter by submitting to one of the following categories: poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or modern language essay.  See more information on the website today.

Dyslexia Symposium at Virginia Commonwealth University
VCU Ruth Harris Professorship and Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), in partnership with the VDOE are hosting the Dyslexia Symposium on November 9, at 8:30 a.m. The Symposium is an opportunity to take a deep dive in learning about dyslexia and language disorders. There are options to attend in-person ($40), or virtually ($20). Register or visit the website for details.

Virginia Farm to School and Directors' Conference 
Registration is now open for the 2024 Virginia Farm to School and Directors' Conference on October 29-30 in Harrisonburg, with optional pre-conference on October 28. The conference convenes Virginia school and community nutrition program operators, producers, distributors, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders for program capacity building and networking sessions. Participants will showcase their commitment to ensuring access to freshly prepared, nutritious, locally sourced, and student inspired meals. The School Nutrition Directors’ Conference on October 30 is open to only school nutrition directors. Visit the website for registration and details.

Caring for Our Watersheds
This is an opportunity for middle and high school students to develop STEM knowledge, environmental and climate literacy, and civic action skills as they create solution-oriented projects to improve their watershed. Teachers attend a 30-minute introductory session and may join virtual meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month starting October 16. Learn more today!

Coursework for Provisionally Licensed Teachers
Longwood University offers a Provisional Licensure Completion Initiative for teachers working towards full licensure. The coursework is discounted for teachers and school divisions paying for their teachers. It is offered fully online in an eight-week format.  Based on your letter from the VDOE and transcripts, we will complete a personalized plan outlining the courses you need to be fully licensed, with advising and coaching along the way. Advancing Your Education Information Session
Radford University’s School of Teacher Education & Leadership will host an information session on October 16, at 4 p.m. to discuss its graduate programs, the Provisional to Professional Pathway, and the Doctor of Education program. This event is ideal for individuals currently working under a Provisional license or those interested in advancing their education with a master’s degree, leadership certificate, or Doctor of Education. Prospective Student Day
The William & Mary School of Education is hosting an in-person Prospective Students Day on October 18.  Learn about our programs in Teacher Ed, Educational Policy, Planning & Leadership, or School Psychology and Counselor Ed.
