From Our Leadership
During the Summer of 2024, the Office of School Quality transitioned its work from supporting divisions with the 2023-2024 Needs Assessments and Support Plans to supporting divisions with creating and maintaining a learning environment that provides for the best academic outcomes for its students.
In this frame, the Office is navigating the steps of the Continuous Improvement Process in evaluating requirements and services for divisions as well as operations within the office. While awaiting final data from the 2023-2024 academic year, we are keeping eyes on the horizon as the Virginia Board of Education is navigating and discussing proposed changes to the Standards of Accreditation Virginia’s ESSA State Plan.
A major portion of the Office of School Quality’s work in 2024-2025 will be to develop the Virginia Support Toolkit, aligned to the Virginia Support Framework, which will itemize supports for schools.
In all cases, the Office of School Quality is committed to serving divisions and schools and being a partner through improvement efforts.
Dr. Brendon Albon
Assistant Superintendent of School Quality Support

The Virginia Support Framework-Updated
The work of the Office of School Quality in providing additional support to divisions by the federal accountability and state accreditation systems is guided by the Virginia Support Framework (VSF). School divisions will have assigned OSQ specialists, consultants, and subject-matter experts who will support plan development and implementation of evidence-based supports around this Framework. All schools, regardless of how they are identified for improvement, will be supported using the domains within the Virginia Support Framework. Check out some of the focus areas to better define each domain.
Check out some of the focus areas to better define each domain. Please note that the Staffing Supports Domain has been revised and now includes two focus areas. The prioritized placement focus area has been removed. The Organizational Learning Supports was formerly titled “Professional Learning Supports.” The School Climate Supports has been revised and now includes three focus areas. The School Discipline focus area has been removed.

Are you Using the VDOE Science Curriculum Framework?
The format of the framework facilitates teacher planning by identifying the Enduring Understandings and the Essential Knowledges and Practices that should be the focus of instruction for each standard. The Enduring Understandings highlight the key concepts and the big ideas of science that are applicable to the standard. The bullets provide the context of those big ideas at that grade or content level. Each standard is expanded in the Essential Knowledge and Practices column. What each student should know and be able to do as evidence of understanding of the standard is identified here.

What is VVAAS?
Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution (VVAAS) is a web-based tool available to all Virginia K-12 divisions. The VVAAS portal displays measures of students’ academic growth over time based on SOL testing data, diagnostic reports for student groups, and student projections to help educators improve student achievement and inform classroom instruction. Reports provided by VVAAS, in tandem with other data sources, can help educators make decisions regarding curriculum changes, identify and support long-term student goals, and help reveal trends of student groups in need of additional support. Check out this link for more information on VVAAS.

As Personnel Change, Update OSQ Contact
Divisions should update their OSQ contact and/or add another contact into SSWS, as well as add a contact for School Improvement Grants if they have schools that are federally identified. To update SSWS with the correct School Quality and School Quality Back-up contacts, division leaders need to communicate with their designated division administrator to make the needed changes internally. If your designated division administrator needs assistance, he/she may send an email to the VDOE Data Services team at resultshelp@doe.virginia.gov. Be advised that division administrators need to go through a verification process. If additional help is needed, please, email Danielle Dooley (danielle.dooley@doe.virginia.gov).
