Join the conversation! Cell Phone-Free Education
On July 9, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued
Executive Order 33 to establish cell phone-free education to promote the health and safety of Virginia’s K-12 students. Executive Order (EO) 33 is focused on eliminating cell phone use during instructional time and addressing the mental health issues arising from children's social media and cell phone addiction. The EO directs VDOE to provide guidance to school boards on cell phone-free education policies and procedures. School boards will establish local cell phone-free education policies and procedures before the end of this year that will be implemented in 2025. Learn more about EO33, provide your feedback online to VDOE, and attend one of the regional listening sessions which run through August 6.

Call for Proposals: VDOE-SCNP Conference Breakout Sessions- Due August 16
VDOE, Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs (VDOE-SCNP) will host the 2024 Virginia Farm to School and School Nutrition Programs Directors’ Conference at the Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg on October 29-30. VDOE-SCNP is now accepting proposals for conference breakout sessions. Details are included in SCNP Memo 2024-2025-09 available on the VDOE-SCNP website. Proposals must be submitted via email to Kiara.Christian@doe.virginia.gov by August 16.

VDOE-SCNP Director’s Conference
The Virginia Farm to School and School Nutrition Programs Director’s Conference 2.5-day event is free and convenes Virginia school and community nutrition program operators, producers, distributors, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders for program capacity building and networking sessions. Participants will enhance their commitment to ensuring equitable access to freshly prepared, locally sourced, and student inspired meals.  All Virginia farm to school stakeholders are encouraged to attend the Farm to School Conference. The Directors’ Conference is open to school nutrition directors only. Student Advisory Board Applications Are Open!
The Student Advisory Board is a highly competitive opportunity comprised of one high school senior from each of the eight Superintendent’s Regions in the Commonwealth. Appointed by the Governor, the Board works closely with the VDOE to provide student perspectives on important issues and play a vital role in the creation of policy by the Virginia Board of Education. Applications are open to any Virginia rising high school senior. The application window opened July 1 and closes September 15. Find out more information today!

High School Voter Registration
In 2020, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation that requires all Virginia public high schools to provide to any enrolled student who is of voting age or otherwise eligible to register to vote access to Virginia voter registration information and applications, or access to the Virginia online voter registration system on a school-owned computing device, and the opportunity to complete such application during the normal course of the school day. VDOE history and social science program has an informational presentation to provide additional information for schools. 

K-3 English and Mathematics Achievement Records Now Available
The Standards of Accreditation Regulation 8VAC20-131-80 requires that schools shall maintain an early skills and knowledge achievement record in reading and mathematics for each student in KG -grade 3 to monitor student progress and to promote successful achievement on the third grade SOL tests.. Legislative Updates
VDOE has published a legislative update regarding legislation affecting education passed by the 2024 General Assembly that has become law. This video presentation (PDF slides) covers many of these new laws. To further assist you with understanding these laws, VDOE has prepared summaries that explain how they affect school divisions, teachers, leaders, students, and parents. 

Commemorating Constitution and Citizenship Day
September 17, 2024 is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day (Constitution Day). This day commemorates the September 17, 1787, signing of the United States Constitution. Information and materials are provided by the three branches of government and can be used in the planning and teaching for this day.

Educator Training on Renewable Energy at JMU
The Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Energy at JMU offers free educator training, field trips, school visits, and hands-on resources to assist K-12 educators teaching renewable energy content.  The Center's integrated activities and hands-on lessons meet SOL curriculum standards at numerous grade levels.  Coach Training and financial support is also available for educators interested in coaching a KidWind Challenge team for the 2024-2025 school year.  Funding from the STEM+C Grant may be used towards this competition. CSAAPT Fall Event
The Chesapeake Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers will be holding their Fall 2024 Meeting on October 19, at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News. All physics/science teachers and students may attend with no membership required. This semi-virtual meeting will be broadcast on Zoom so that people from afar, both presenters and attendees, can join in.

Virginia Association of Science Teachers 2024 Annual Professional Development Institute will be held in Williamsburg, VA, November 14 - 16, 2024. The theme of the Institute is Global CSI: Curiosity. Science. Inspiration. See more information from VAST about this opportunity.

Complete the required prerequisite SEDP 630 course for a provisional license in Special Education for as little as $700 + book costs with the special limited $2000 scholarship this fall at VCU. Register  as a non-degree seeking student to secure your seat and potential scholarship in the synchronous 5 week (9/9 to 10/11) course.
