ActiVAtED Learning Adventures VDOE invites educators of all levels on a virtual summer road trip around the Commonwealth for ActiVAtED Learning Adventures, a new webinar series. The series will feature discussions with leading educators throughout Virginia about what gets them excited in using technology to inspire student engagement. The 12-episode season will launch new episodes every two weeks. Webinars will be part of the VVA Statewide Weekly Meetings held Tuesdays at 1 p.m. starting May 28. STEM Content Workshop The National Math + Science Initiative will host a STEM educator professional development training for 250 teachers and school leaders serving students in grades 3-12 from July 30 through August 1, at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach. Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis to cover NMSI’s registration fee and related travel costs. 2024 TechKnowledgy Conference Call for Proposals The VDOE Assistive Technology Network is planning the 2024 TechKnowledgy Conference which will be held November 18-20 in Harrisonburg. All interested persons are invited to submit proposals for 75-minute breakout sessions held on November 19. Proposals should seek to engage participants in activities to explore and share innovative strategies in assistive technology (AT) for students of all ages and disabilities. Public Hearing on Revisions to the Standards of Accreditation The Virginia Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the proposed revisions to the Standards of Accreditation on June 4 at 4 p.m. This revision to the Standards of Accreditation focuses on changes to the accreditation process and the development of a school performance and support framework. Parents, educators, and interested citizens are invited to attend the session and comment. Interested individuals can register to attend and/or speak in the public hearing. Student Ambassadors for Virginia's Environment The SAVE Program is open for rising high school juniors and seniors for the 2024-2025 program year. Student ambassadors help reduce litter and increase awareness about litter, recycling, and beautification in their respective communities. The program builds a network for learning and collaboration and connects students from across Virginia to each other and fellow ambassadors in other states. Applications are due June 15.
SWVA Administrators Network Improvement Community Forum Registration is open for the Forum on June 21 from 9-3 p.m. at Radford University’s Kyle Hall. The free workshop will focus on how to lead schools where teachers come, stay, and thrive. Outstanding teachers and leaders from the area will present their work at this event. School divisions are invited to bring a team of key leaders.
Biotech in a Box The Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech is accepting applications for the Biotech in a Box loan program for the 2024-2025 school year. The loan program offers 5 different kits: DNA Biotechnology, Protein Electrophoresis, Column Chromatography, Introduction to Immunology, and Slime Mold Behavior. Four thermal cyclers are also available to borrow. The deadline for initial scheduling is July 12.
15th annual Brown Teacher Institute Join Library of Virginia and guest speakers for this two-day Institute focused on research that explores Virginia’s Indigenous history. The Library’s exhibition, Indigenous Perspectives, highlights how the tribes remain a vital part of Virginia. Teachers will explore how to use primary sources to enhance student learning and discover new digital resources. Register for one of the institutes held in four of the eight Superintendent’s Regions. Preference will be given to attendees from Regions one, four, six and eight. Teachers must attend the entire institute to receive a PD certificate and stipend.
VDOE Survey VDOE Department of Special Populations and its state-funded partners that implement the agency's priorities and initiatives are collecting information from relevant stakeholders about statewide needs to support struggling learners. Survey data will be used to determine priority and focus High-Leverage Practices for future professional development and training.
Building Quantum Into Your Classroom George Mason University invites high school chemistry, physics, and computer science teachers to apply to a professional development program, Building Quantum Into Your Classroom. This hybrid, five-week summer program will have teachers working in teams to develop quantum material that can be incorporated into the classroom. The program starts in-person in Fairfax on June 27, followed by virtual weekly work, and concludes in-person on July 31. Applications are due on June 9. Accepted teachers will receive 50 professional development hours and a stipend.
Content Teaching Academies Join VDOE at the Content Teaching Academies on June 24–27, at James Madison University. The Academies are designed to provide professional development to participating Virginia educators to enhance the outcomes of students with disabilities using high-quality instruction and to promote inclusive practices. For all public school participants, the VDOE will assume the cost of registration, meals, and double-occupancy lodging on JMU’s campus. School divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses for participants as this cost is not assumed by VDOE. Register today!
