Good Morning,
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend an Educator Encouragement Service at Shiloh Baptist Church in Fredericksburg with Dr. Harry Thomas, Dr. Thomas Taylor and Dr. Marci Catlett. I was truly honored to be invited to elevate the educators in their communities and uplift their educators for the entire school year. It was exciting to see an entire community come together to support and encourage their educators at the start of the year. I know this partnership will help teachers feel valued every day and want to send a special thank you to Pastor Thomas for seeing the importance of the educational community. #ElevateEducatorsVA
As we continue to launch the school year, it is essential that we focus on student attendance. #AttendanceMatters VA Last week, we shared several resources and focused on five key strategies. Here are additional resources to support your ongoing focus on attendance:
- Local Communications – Early Grades Attendance
- Breakfast After the Bell and School Nutrition programs
-
Implementing A Successful Program: This webpage provides important information to help with planning and implementing a successful breakfast program.
-
Strategies for Increasing Breakfast Participation at Middle and High Schools: This resource highlights the three Breakfast After the Bell models (Breakfast In the Classroom, Grab and Go, and Second Chance Breakfast) that can be implemented at any level elementary through high school; it highlights strategies to increase participation while using these models.
-
School Breakfast Promotion Strategies: This resource highlights promotion strategies to build awareness, generate excitement and ultimately increase school breakfast participation.
- Funding: No Kid Hungry Virginia has grant funding available to support school districts seeking to launch, enhance, and expand school breakfast programs. To learn more about this opportunity, reach out to ssteely@strength.org.
We will continue to share resources on our other strategies “having a trusted adult,” “celebrating successes”, and “reducing barriers” in our next newsletter.
In this newsletter, you will find the launch of our VLA trainings. I encourage you to take time with your specialists, ask them what they learned, and discuss possible recommendations to support your school as you begin to transition to the expectations found in the literacy act. Learn more about the Virginia Literacy Act.
I want to share a few reminders:
- The ESSER Spending Website goes live on September 5th. Remember to draw down your funds now to ensure that your public records demonstrate your expenses for ESSER II and III.
- All school divisions have access to VDOE’s ElevateEducatorVA job board to post vacancies and encourage incoming educators to apply for vacancies. Our offices are getting frequent calls from interested educators who are having difficulty finding vacant positions. Please contact Robert Gilstrap, Assistant Superintendent for Education Preparation, if you need assistance.
- We are hosting a VVAAS Growth Overview webinar opportunity for division superintendents. During this 1-hour webinar, offered four different times, we will share how growth is currently calculated, the key components of VVAAS growth, and what are takeaways you can use to analyze your division's growth.
To learn more about VVAAS, register for one of the three remaining dates offered below.
Thank you for all you do for our 1.3 million children across the Commonwealth.
Sincerely,
Lisa
