Approval of K-3 Core Curriculum and Deadline for Submitting Locally Created Literacy Resources Superintendent's Memo 118-23 provides an update on the K-3 Core Curriculum approved by the Board of Education as per the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and a reminder for a July 1 deadline to submit locally created literacy curriculum.
Nominations for 2022-2023 Career and Technical Education Curriculum Review Committees The VDOE Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education is accepting nominations for the 2023- 2024 CTE curriculum review committees. School divisions may nominate a CTE teacher for any of the 48 committees. Approximately 12 applicants will be selected by the Superintendent of Public Instruction to serve on each committee. All nominees who wish to serve on a committee must complete the web-based application. See Superintendent's Memo 117-23 for details.
Public Comment Forums for College Partnership Laboratory School Applications The College Partnership Laboratory Schools Standing Committee received for first review college partnership laboratory schools applications from Southside Virginia Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University. In order to provide appropriate input from parents, teachers, and other interested parties and to obtain information to assist the Standing Committee in its evaluation of the lab school applications, the Standing Committee is seeking public comment on each application. Virginia Holocaust Museum Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute The Virginia Holocaust Museum and Longwood University work together each summer to offer professional development for middle and high school educators. A two and a half day workshop will be offered from July 17-19, at the museum in Richmond. Earn up to 45 recertification points as you hear historian-led lectures and interact with museum resources. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, teachers will be reimbursed the registration fee and receive a stipend. Register today or contact Megan Ferenczy for more details.

SURN Leadership Conference -June 20- 21 Join your peers for the SURN Leadership Conference held at the William & Mary School of Education. School division teams and individuals will have the opportunity to discuss topics with leading researchers, reflect on the prior school year, and plan strategically for the upcoming year. Creative Writing Professional Development at The Fralin Museum of Art Join Fralin educators and UVA Creative Writing instructors on July 19 at 8:30 a.m. for a morning of observation and creative writing at the museum. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This teacher program is free but registration is required.
K-12 School Innovation Planning (K12 SIP) Grant Individual school divisions or consortia of school divisions are eligible to submit proposals meeting the intent of the RFP document. Proposals may target one or more schools in each participating school division. School divisions awarded planning grants must be prepared to implement their innovative reform models over two years beginning with the 2024-2025 school year. Completed proposals must be received electronically by the VDOE no later than 4 p.m. on July 14.
Virginia Health and Physical Activity Institute VDOE extends an invitation to all administrators and teachers to attend and be presenters at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Virginia 2023 Health and Physical Activity Institute, which will be held July 9-12, 2023, at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The primary objective of the initiative is to improve the quality of health and physical education instruction and provide support for implementing the Virginia Board of Education standards of learning for health and physical education, which enhance the wellness and educational performance of Virginia’s students.
