Did You Know? 

Virginia parents will soon be able to apply for K-12 Learning Recovery grants to access educational services their children need to address the impact of the pandemic on their academic progress and well-being. Parents will access the K-12 Learning Recovery grant application through a secure online portal — now under development — and select a vetted, pre-approved tutoring service or other qualifying service provider. Standards of Learning Item Review Committees  
Apply today! Friday,  March 17, 2023  is the deadline to submit applications for the 2023 Standards of Learning Item Review Committees. For meeting dates, criteria, and application details, refer to Superintendent's Memo 045-23.               

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Virtual Workshop: Revolutionary Women
Join historian, interpreter and educator Darci Tucker on March 21 at 7 p.m. to explore the American Revolution through the eyes of Elizabeth Thompson, a loyalist spy; Deborah Samson, who fought as a patriot;  and Jane Walker, whose story represents the thousands of wives who accompanied the Army. Participants will gain historical content about women’s rights and roles in colonial America and discuss tips for how students can research the past. Virginia Holocaust Museum Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute
The Virginia Holocaust Museum and Longwood University work together each summer to offer professional development for middle and high school educators.  A two and a half day workshop will be offered twice this summer, once from June 26-28 and the second from July 17-19, at the museum in Richmond. Earn up to 45 recertification points. Contact Megan Ferenczy, Director of Education for more details or register by May 19! 

Canvas's Training Services Portal Weekly Sessions
Educators can participate in training sessions each week via Canvas's Training Services Portal. To find any of the sessions listed, first make sure you are logged into your Canvas account. The upcoming hour-long sessions are appropriate for Division and School Leaders, Statewide LMS Admin, Instructors, and Support.  3/16 at 5:30 p.m.: Quiz Basics; 3/17 at 11:30 a.m.: Training Services Portal First Look; 3/20 at 2:30 p.m.:  Account Considerations for K-6 Canvas Administrators; 3/21 at 2:30 p.m.:  Assessment Tools for Administrators; 3/22 at 1:00 p.m.            

Journey into Teaching Academy
The VDOE Department of Special Education and Student Services is announcing its fifth cohort of the Journey into Teaching Academy. The Academy is a yearlong professional development initiative for teachers completing their second year of teaching by the end of the 2022-2023 school year and entering their third year of teaching during the 2023-2024 SY as a provisionally licensed special education teacher. Completed applications are due to the VDOE by April 1. For more information about this initiative and the application process, please see Superintendent's Memo 039-23.

Blue Skies Blended Learning Workshops 
Presented in partnership with Instructure, the Blue Skies Blended Learning series features 16 free online workshops designed specifically for K–12 instructors, leaders, and support personnel at Virginia public schools and divisions. Participants will learn how to incorporate blended learning methods into their professional practice and leverage the VVA Statewide LMS (Canvas LMS) in face-to-face instruction. Shenandoah University now offers a synchronous online Master of Science in Education Administration and Professional Studies Certificate in Administration & Supervision program! Radford University invites you to attend upcoming virtual information sessions to learn about graduate programs offered in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership. Graduate Program Coordinators will be in Zoom breakout rooms to discuss: Curriculum and Instruction (M.S.); Mathematics Education (M.S. & Certificate); Ed Leadership (M.S.); Literacy Ed (M.S. & Certificate); Special Ed (M.S.), Education (Ed.D.) Reduced tuition rate for Virginia Educators pursuing master’s level work is available and some programs have grant funding opportunities. Register to attend on April 3 or May 1 at 4:00 p.m.

Reading Specialist Endorsement Certificate
William & Mary offers a post-professional online certificate for teachers who currently hold a master’s degree but would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. It is a fully online 21-credit program, offered in 7-week terms over five semesters including summers. Join a new cohort starting in July. Online M.Ed. or Endorsement only in Reading, Literacy and Learning
Earn your master’s and reading endorsement, or just the reading endorsement if you already hold a master’s, in our fully online courses.  Collaborate with a cohort of teachers and share your new skills directly with students. Longwood University is holding a virtual info session on March 30 at 5 p.m. for teachers who are interested in the online Reading, Literacy, & Learning M.Ed. or endorsement programs. M.A.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction-Music Education
Virginia Tech’s Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum & Instruction with a focus in Music Education is designed for students who have completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a similar degree program and desire to pursue a masters with teacher licensure. The graduate program is set up in a cohort model, and students can usually complete the program in 2 years or less. Join the virtual information session on March 23 at 7:30 p.m. or email Dr. Catheryn Foster, Program Coordinator for more information.

Leadership in Mathematics Education
Earn a Master’s Degree or an Educational Specialist Degree focused on Leadership in Mathematics Education from Regent University’s online programs. Grow your teaching career in this high-demand area as you also influence improvement in school mathematics programs.
