FLAVA Updates
FLAVA spring conference - Proposals due soon!
It can't happen without you! The deadline is fast approaching to submit proposals for sessions at the FLAVA Spring Conference. Share your great ideas, strategies, and successes from your world language programs with colleagues at this one day mini-conference. The deadline to submit your proposals online is March 15, 2023.
Registration now open for FLAVA spring conference
This year's Spring mini-conference, Reconnect and Reenergize, will be held at Washington & Lee University in beautiful Lexington, VA on April 22, 2023. Registration is open with regular registration for $40 and student/presenter registration for $20. Breakfast and lunch are included for all attendees who register online by April 5, 2023. Onsite registration will also be available but will not include meals.
Leadership Initiative for Language Learning (LILL)
Are you looking to grow your leadership skills and be a change agent for world languages? If you said YES, FLAVA encourages you to apply to be the FLAVA representative for the 2023 -2024 LILL Cohort. The Leadership Initiative for Language Learning was established in 2015 to “empower individuals to become agents for change, in order to foster a growth mindset focused on effective teaching and learning, and purposeful nurturing of leadership skills, all in the service of learners.” It has evolved into a two-year initial commitment (with participation in two LILL Summer Institutes plus collegial support and sessions during the intervening academic year) that continues beyond graduation through a lifelong leadership trajectory. All FLAVA members are welcome to apply to serve as our LILL Cohort 5 representative by completing the LILL application:. All applications must be submitted by Friday, March 10, 2023 at 11:59pm EST.

Continuing education opportunities from George Mason University
Tuition discount awards available for Virginia educators!
Further your career by earning a Master's degree in Foreign Languages at George Mason University, Virginia's largest and most diverse public research university! Choose a concentration in French, Spanish, French and Spanish, or Spanish Bilingual/Multicultural Education. Set yourself apart by pursuing our graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education, which can be completed fully online as a stand-alone program or taken together with the MA, with courses counting toward both degrees!
If you currently teach at a public or private school in the state of Virginia, you may be eligible for a tuition discount award which can be applied to 2 graduate courses, or 6 credits, per semester, and up to 18 credits total. Modern and Classical Languages Virtual Open House (March 8, 5:30-6:30pm)
Join George Mason University staff for a virtual open house to learn more about graduate programs and ask questions about the application process, coursework, funding opportunities, etc. RSVP IS REQUIRED.
Learn ASL online for free
The Oklahoma School for the Deaf and Blind has made available free online courses in basic American Sign Language for adult learners. These are non-credit level courses and do not count towards professional development hours or continuing education units. They are simply basic courses in conversational American Sign Language.
Registration open for EdcampCIVa 2023
This free two-day summer event focuses on teaching with comprehensible input and collaboration between teachers. It will take place at Cape Henry Collegiate in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Tuesday, June 27th to Wednesday, June 28th from 9:00 am-1:00 pm. CARLA Priority Teacher PD Scholarships
Applications due March 17
The Priority Teacher Professional Development (PD) Scholarship program is designed to promote access to affordable professional development for K-16 world language educators who are currently teaching in the United States and fit into one or more of these categories:
- Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL) teacher
- Community College (CC) language teacher
- Minority Serving Institution (MSI) language teacher
- Historically Black College/University (HBCU) foreign language instructor
The program provides funding for selected teachers in these categories to attend a CARLA Summer Institute for no charge. Applicants must propose a follow-up activity or project based on the content of a CARLA Summer Institute of their choosing.

Registration Opens for PEARLL Summer Institutes
PEARLL is excited to announce that registration for its annual series of summer institutes in 2023 is now open! This year’s online summer institutes are once again built around the TELL Pathways to Learner Success providing busy educators with unique opportunities to focus on an area of personal growth of interest to them. Join other educators to acquire new knowledge on the most essential proven practices, collaborate to process new learning in small group discussions, and apply new skills with the help of an experienced educator. This summer, PEARLL invites you to explore effective practices and start the school year more energized and ready to embed practices that keep the focus on the learner.
