It is a month of fine arts celebrations! It has been wonderful to see and hear the incredible work of Virginia students being showcased by their educators for Music In Our Schools Month, Youth Art Month, and Theatre In Our Schools Month. We would love to hear about how you celebrate student creativity and performances. Please email us using the contact information at the bottom of this newsletter to share events and celebrations in your school division this month - you may even be featured in next month's newsletter.

SAVE THE DATE –
2023 VDOE Fine Arts Leadership Conference
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is sponsoring the 2023 VDOE Fine Arts Leadership Conference for fine arts K-12 administrators and specialists. The Conference will be held on May 10, 2023, 9:30a.m. - 2:30p.m. on the campus of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.
The Conference will focus on topics of high quality and standards-aligned instructional materials, providing meaningful professional learning experiences for fine arts educators, and data review and analysis related to fine arts education in Virginia. Participants have an opportunity to connect and collaborate with fine arts instruction leaders across the state. Participants will receive a certificate of participation for 5 hours of professional learning.
Each school division is encouraged to send individuals who supervise Fine Arts instruction for students in K-12, including central office fine arts specialists or a teacher leader for each fine arts discipline identified by the central office fine arts specialist or contact.
Conference registration is offered at no cost to public sector employees and includes morning coffee/tea and lunch. Parking will be provided to all Conference participants at no charge.

Youth Art Month (YAM) – The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including problem solving, creativity, observation, and communication. Art shows, special exhibits, fundraisers, and school and community activities take place annually, traditionally during March, to celebrate visual art education for grades K – 12. Theatre in Our Schools Month – Thousands of students and theatre educators raise awareness of the benefits of theatre education in March every year. Theatre in Our Schools is a joint venture between the Educational Theatre Association and the American Alliance for Theatre & Education.

Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®) - NAfME – For more than 30 years, March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®). NAfME hopes that teachers, students, and music supporters alike will find ways to join in on the celebration through creative activities and advocacy.

Virginia Tech’s M.A.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction in Music Education program – Virginia Tech’s Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum & Instruction with a focus in Music Education is designed for students who have completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a similar degree program and desire to pursue a masters with teacher licensure. The graduate program is set up in a cohort model, and students can usually complete the program in 2 years or less. UMW College of Education hosting field trips for area fifth graders – University of Mary Washington College of Education invites students to visit the maker space, where technology and tools are used for creative problem solving and receive STEAM-based lessons from faculty and teachers-in-training.

Call for Student Performing Artists: The U.S. Department of Education is seeking student performing artists (such as bands/marching bands, choirs, color guards, dancers, drumlines, poets/spoken word artists, soloists, theatrical performers) currently enrolled in institutions of elementary, secondary, or post-secondary education or accredited trade schools, who exemplify resilience, diversity, and excellence.

National Association of Music Educators (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference: Registration is now open for the NAfME Eastern Division Conference in Rochester, NY. The conference will take place April 13-16, 2023. The theme is “Connect, Create, Communicate!” The early bird rate is available through March 17, 2023.
Grammy Camp – GRAMMY Museum: Spend the summer learning how you can make a career in the music industry. Grammy Camp is a 7-day nonresidential interactive summer music industry program that offers high school students interested in pursuing a career in the music industry an insider’s look at achieving success in their chosen career. Applications are due March 31, 2023.
