Did You Know? 

Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow announced that VDOE has launched Engage Virginia, an academic recovery and coaching program to help students recover from the impact of the pandemic on learning, attendance and related issues. Engage Virginia services are available to students, families and schools at no cost through a partnership between VDOE and Graduation Alliance. Participating students and families are assigned an academic success coach to help them navigate the program and access online and in-person services. Read more from VDOE today!

Governor Youngkin’s Proclamation for Black History Month
Each February our nation renews a commitment to consider the impact and legacy that Black Americans have had through their leadership in our country. Governor Youngkin proclaimed February 2023 as Black History Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Noted in the Proclamation, “Black Virginians continue to shape the economic, cultural, political, and landscapes of Virginia and the country.” Read more today!

2023 VMSA Annual Conference
The Virginia Middle School Association's annual conference is scheduled for March 30, at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Register or find out more information today! 

Application for the English Standards Revision Committee 
The VDOE English Program is seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on the English Standards Revision Committee to review the K-12 English Standards of Learning during the summer of 2023. Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, reading specialists, or other educators who have expertise with the content area and current standards. Individuals who wish to serve on a committee to review the K-12 English Standards of Learning must submit an application through the web-based process, Instruction Committee Application Processing System (ICAPS). The application will require a professional reference and division approval. Completed applications are due to the VDOE through ICAPS by  March 10. See Superintendent's Memo 026-23 for details.

VDOE CTE Career Success Stars
The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education is seeking nominations of former CTE students who qualify for recognition as one of the Commonwealth’s brightest Career Success Stars. The individual success stories will be featured as video profiles on the VDOE website highlighting how CTE programs provide academic and technical skills for postsecondary success. The school divisions’ CTE administrators will be provided the link to the nomination form to distribute to their schools. The nominations are due to the VDOE by April 14.

Opportunities to Participate in the Review and Revision of the 2017 English Standards of Learning  
On February 2, 2023, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) presented to the Board of Education the review and revision process of the 2017 English Standards of Learning. Superintendent’s Memo 027-23 shares information regarding how to provide feedback and public comment on the 2017 English Standards of Learning.         

VATE Literacy Explosion
The Virginia Association of Teachers of English announces their 11th Literacy Explosion, a language arts festival designed to celebrate and promote the integration of literacy and 21st century learning skills. Literacy Explosion encourages and rewards Virginia students’ excellence in reading, writing, speaking, presenting, filming, drawing, and acting. Submissions are due March 4.

VCTM Annual Conference
The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics will host their 2023 Annual Conference, Reimagining Mathematics, at George Mason University - Fairfax Campus on March 17-18. Registration is now open. Find out more information today!

Reading Specialist Endorsement Certificate
William & Mary offers a post-professional online certificate for teachers who currently hold a master’s degree but would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. Choose Your Path: Master’s & Endorsement or Endorsement Only
Earn a Master’s Degree focused on educational leadership through from Longwood University’s five-semester hybrid model designed for working professionals. If you have already have a Master’s degree, consider the hybrid Educational Leadership Endorsement courses to prepare for administrative and supervisory responsibilities at the PreK-12 level.  Successful completion and a passing score on the SLLA meet VDOE eligibility requirements for the Admin. and Supervision PreK-12 endorsement.
