Message from the Coordinator
Hello and happy new year! This month’s edition of the VDOE Fine Arts Newsletter contains several timely opportunities for fine arts educators and division leaders, including a meeting to share the launch of the Virginia Arts Education Data Project. I hope you will join us for this month’s VDOE Fine Arts Update so you can see the dashboard and learn about accessing and using fine arts enrollment data at the local, division, and state levels. Details are in this newsletter.
In addition, VDOE is welcoming Sherry Hatton to the fine arts staff in the Office of Humanities! We are so fortunate to have her join the team. Sherry brings a wealth of music education experience to the Department. You can learn more about Sherry below.

Special Announcement: New VDOE Music Specialist
Sherry Hatton is a veteran Music educator of 26 years with experience in Pre-K-12 Instrumental, Vocal, Guitar, and General Music serving public, private and parochial schools. She holds a BS and MA in Music Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an MS in School Leadership and Administration from Capella University, a certificate in Arts Integration and STEAM from the Institute for Arts Integration and STEAM, and is currently working toward a certification in Instructional Coaching.
Sherry has worked with VDOE on Standards of Learning Review Committees and creating sample instructional resources over the past 12 years. She works with the Institute for Arts Integration & STEAM, providing professional development videos and lessons, and has published articles using arts integration strategies. She has worked with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) on music Praxis test committees to create questions and develop the national cut score. Sherry presents, and guest conducts at local, state, and national levels. She was voted Teacher of the Year by her peers, was recognized in “Who’s Who” of American professionals, and has received community accommodations from the Smithfield, VA VFW for distinguished service in community outreach through music.
Outside of promoting music, advocacy, and teaching, Sherry loves outdoor activities and has served as a leader and mentor for Girl Scouts of America and as head coach for Girls on the Run. Sherry lives in Chesapeake, Virginia, with her husband, Jon, and is a proud mother of three children and two stepchildren.

February 2023 VDOE Fine Arts Update
Join VDOE fine arts staff on Wednesday, February 15 at 3:00 p.m. At this meeting, Dr. Annamarie Bollino from the Virginia Coalition for Fine Arts Education will share information about Virginia’s new Arts Education Data Project, which includes an interactive dashboard of state and local arts enrollment data. CTE Curriculum Update for Entertainment Design and Technology: CTE is holding a revision meeting to update the curriculum framework for the Entertainment Design and Technology course and would like to invite teachers with the Theatre Arts PreK-12 endorsement (1400) to participate in this review meeting. This virtual meeting is planned for February 23, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Reimbursement for substitute teachers is provided, if required. To access the course framework, please use this link, Entertainment Design and Technology, on the CTE Resource Center’s website (on the left side of the screen, please select “Modules” to view the framework). Professional Development Opportunities to Support Best Practices for English Learner Instruction: As part of the Virginia Department of Education’s ongoing effort to support school and division personnel in planning and implementing effective instructional strategies and programs for English Learners (ELs), multiple professional development opportunities for division and school staff who support ELs will be offered during the spring and summer of 2023. The attached document provides session descriptions, recommended audiences, and registration links.

Webinar: Bibliocounseling: On February 2, 9:30-10:30 a.m., learn how a school counselor and media center specialist worked together to create a resource collection that is representative of the student population and their emotional wellness needs. They strategically crafted synchronous and asynchronous book clubs and provided appropriate resources via QR codes on books. Audience: Middle/High

Call for Entries Library of Virginia First Fridays Exhibitions -Virginia Stories: The Library of Virginia --Virginia Stories invites you to explore your experiences, observations, communities, and culture. All Virginia artists, regardless of age or skill level, are eligible to enter 1 to 4 original pieces of two-dimensional art and its story (+/-250 words) for consideration. The first review date will be January 31, 2023 but the call remains open through October 15, 2023. Regular reviews will occur by the Selection Committee.

Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) Launches Partnership and Impact Grants: The Partnership and Impact grants are live on VCA’s new website! The five grants that comprise Partnership and Impact grants – General Operating Support, Operating Support Small, Creative Community Partnership Grants, Community Impact, and Education Impact – reflect the grants refresh recently completed by the VCA. Newly launched with clear entry points, streamlined applications, and simplified processes, prospective and current grantees can more easily apply for VCA’s grants and more easily access state and federal funding critical to a vibrant arts ecosystem in Virginia. All applicants for General Operating Support, Operating Support Small, Creative Community Partnership Grants, Community Impact, and Education Impact grants are invited to begin now and submit their applications by the published deadlines.

2023 Teacher of the Year has passion for music, learning, Mecklenburg Sun, 1/18/23 … La Crosse Elementary music teacher Elizabeth Taylor is the 2023 Teacher of the Year for Mecklenburg County Public Schools. She was chosen from a pool of six candidates — one teacher from each Mecklenburg County elementary, middle and high school. Superintendent of Schools Paul Nichols made the announcement Friday at La Crosse Elementary School with Principal Connie Puckett and surrounded by Taylor’s choir students.
