Did You Know? Troops to Teachers! The Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow announced that the Virginia Department of Education is allocating $760,000 in federal pandemic relief funds to expand the Commonwealth’s efforts to recruit veterans and retired military personnel for second careers as teachers.  The funding will support VDOE’s Troops to Teachers Virginia Center at William & Mary. General Assembly 2023 Begins! 
The General Assembly meets annually, beginning on the second Wednesday in January, for 60 days in even-numbered years and for 30 days in odd-numbered years, with an option to extend annual sessions for a maximum of 30 days. The Senate of Virginia and the Virginia House of Delegates, both bodies of the Virginia Legislature, meet in historic Richmond, Virginia. Check out the available citizen resources.

Multilingual Learners 101 Workshop-January 30
SURN is calling all middle and high school general and special education teachers to join them for this half-day interactive workshop in Norfolk. Participants will explore how English Learners acquire social and academic language and literacy, and participants will learn how to build background knowledge, identify and teach academic language, and provide language and reading practice across the content areas. 2023 VaSCL Student Leadership Design Institute
The Institute will provide student teams an opportunity to participate in a design challenge that allows them to draw upon their own experiences and observations to create team solutions that address critical issues that impact today’s high school students, their families, or community members. Behavior Intervention Begins with Prevention: Fostering a Safe Learning Community-Feb. 14 Register for this series sponsored by the Virginia School Consortium for Learning. This interactive workshop will focus on practical ways to support and respond to student behavior. Participants will deepen knowledge and skills to manage the ever-changing classroom environment in ways that promote behavioral competency over compliance. Megan Williams, behavioral specialist, will focus with participants on how to prevent behavior issues from occurring in the first place as well as how to intervene when behavioral issues begin to escalate.

Lessons of WWII High School Education Program
Learning the lessons of World War II has a strong positive impact on the ideals and aspirations of our nation’s young citizens. Contact Holly Rotondi, Executive Director of the Friends of the National WWII Memorial for more information on how Alex Kershaw, historian and author of The Bedford Boys can visit secondary history classrooms in Virginia through a grant.  

Infusing Data Literacy Across the Curriculum for Grades 4-12- Feb. 16
The Virginia Data Science Team leads will immerse you in hands-on data literacy experiences and guide you through some of the free tools to see the power of big data. In the afternoon breakouts, you will team up with educators from your content area: Math, CS, CTE, Science, SS/Humanities, and Elementary.  See the connections to your Virginia Standards of Learning and Competencies and try out data sets related to your content. Practical Assessment in Your Classroom
Designed for middle and high school teachers, William and Mary is hosting an interactive half-day workshop on January 30 to explore the ins and outs of practical classroom assessment. The focus is on engaging in meaningful day-to-day formative assessment. This is a great refresher on foundational principles of assessment and an opportunity to gain practical strategies for effective classroom assessment and feedback. Register today.  

Grammar Innovation Conference
The National Council of Teachers of English Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar is hosting its 2023 Conference on July 14. The conference theme is Grammar Innovation. Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Invitational Leadership Institute offered by the Shenandoah Valley Writing Project for all K-University instructors. Virtual Information Session on M.Ed in Curriculum & Instruction
The fully online M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction program at the University of Virginia provides flexible opportunities for you to pursue graduate studies, licensure requirements, or professional development. No GRE scores are required, while the degree can be completed in 2 years part-time and is taught by expert faculty. Choose one of the following areas of emphasis: ABA, Educational Innovation, ESL, Gifted Education, Instructional Technology, Literacy, Professional Studies, SEL, Social Foundations, and Special Education. Shenandoah University now offers a synchronous online Master of Science in Education Administration and Professional Studies Certificate in Administration & Supervision program! M.Ed. Program Opportunities
Averett University will be hosting virtual information sessions on February 2at 5:30 p.m. and February 7 at 4:30 p.m. to share information about their Special Education, Reading Specialist, Math Specialist, and Administration & Supervision M.Ed. and Endorsement programs beginning in March and May. "Would You Lead?” Hybrid Master’s Degree Focused on Educational Leadership
Longwood University’s Master of Science in Education with an Educational Leadership Concentration is a five-semester hybrid model designed for working professionals. Blending real-world applicability with real-time flexibility, the program meets five Saturdays per semester on-campus; the remainder of learning occurs asynchronously online! Endorsement in SPED-General Curriculum
Are you interested in adding an endorsement in Special Education-General Curriculum? The University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development is excited to present their online Special Education General Curriculum Graduate Certificate. This Certificate is designed to equip K-12 teachers with the knowledge and skills to address the needs of students with disabilities in the general curriculum classroom. In addition, it meets the requirements to add-on the VDOE Special Education General Curriculum endorsement in grades K-6, 6-8 and Secondary. Master of Science in Counselor Education
Learn from dedicated, doctoral-level instructors at Longwood University who bring a wide range of counseling experience to their students. Choose from a track in Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling with an opportunity to gain your LPC. The School Counseling track fulfills the VDOE licensure regulations for school counselors.  This is a 60-credit in-person program that can be completed full-time or part-time and includes hybrid, weekend and evening courses.
