Summer 2022 Fine Arts Professional Learning Opportunities from the Virginia Department of Education
This edition of the VDOE Fine Arts Monthly News is devoted to sharing the many opportunities for fine arts educators of Virginia to engage in discipline-specific professional learning opportunities this summer. You can see all of these opportunities at-a-glance on the Summer 2022 VDOE Fine Arts Professional Learning Calendar.
In-person Opportunities
Southwest Virginia Music Institute
June 22-24, 2022
The purpose of the Institute is to provide a hands-on professional learning opportunity for music educators related to music and cultural heritage of Southwest Virginia. Participants will engage in workshops led by musicians including The Crooked Road’s Artist-in-Residence, Andrew Small, and old-time musician Emily Schaad. Experiential workshops focus on music styles such as traditional old-time and bluegrass music, folk instruments, and improvisation. Music educators will collaborate with professionals on the curation and development of instructional resources and strategies aligned to the Music Standards of Learning. Chickahominy Arts & Culture Institute
July 29-30, 2022
The purpose of the Institute is to provide educators with arts and cultural classroom connections between fine arts educators and tribal arts and culture of Virginia. The Institute will provide workshops led by the Chickahominy Indian Tribe and the Chickahominy Indian Eastern Division Tribe. Experiential workshops will include topics such as beading, clay, dance, leatherwork, and storytelling and will provide educators with resources and connections to implement the Fine Arts Standards of Learning. Fine Arts Standards of Learning and Resources for School and Division Leaders
25-minute Recorded Session, available after June 27, 2022
In this 25 minute recorded presentation, receive a basic overview of the Fine Arts Standards of Learning and learn the "look-fors" of what exemplary, standards-aligned fine arts instruction looks like during a classroom observation. Then, hear about innovation and goals for the future of fine arts education in Virginia, and how you can support them as a school or division leader. Participants will be offered resources for supporting implementation of the Fine Arts Standards of Learning.
Digital Art & Design Professional Learning Community
Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
Calling all Virginia teachers of digital art for grades 6-12! The Virginia Department of Education fine arts staff is hosting an informal professional learning community to meet visual arts educators from across Virginia and discuss current topics facing digital media and design classrooms. The session will be a 45-minute interactive discussion. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who attend.
Music Technology Professional Learning Community
Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
Calling all Virginia teachers of music technology for grades 6-12! The Virginia Department of Education fine arts staff is hosting an informal professional learning community to meet music educators from across Virginia and discuss current topics facing music technology classrooms. The session will be a 45-minute interactive discussion. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who attend.
Elementary Visual Arts SOL Webinar
Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
This session is for elementary visual arts educators new to their position, experienced educators looking for a quick refresher of the Standards, or grade-level general education teachers looking to develop interdisciplinary connections. The webinar will begin with a 45-minute presentation to provide an overview of the Visual Arts Standards of Learning, as well as pointers for planning for standards-aligned instruction in the 2022-2023 school year. The 45-minute recorded session will be followed by a 30 minute unrecorded interactive discussion and Q&A period. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who attend the live session.

Rehearsal Strategies for Engaging English Learners in Music
Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
Join us as Angela Ammerman shares innovative rehearsal strategies specifically geared toward English Learners (ELs)! Learn about resources and strategies to provide language support and engage English Learners in the music classroom. This highly engaging session will invigorate your next rehearsal and provide tools to level up your English Learners! The session will include interactive discussion and sharing of EL strategies with colleagues. A certificate of participation will be issued to those who attend this one-hour session. The session will be recorded.

Highlights from the Chickahominy Arts and Culture Institute
Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
In June 2022, fine arts educators will participate in an arts and culture experience with the Chickahominy Indian Tribe. This webinar will allow participants to share experiences and resources from the Institute. Webinar attendees will receive resources and lesson ideas for connecting Virginia Fine Arts Standards of Learning with Virginia Indian tribal arts and culture. Virtual Fine Arts Leadership Conference: Innovation in the Arts
Tuesday, July 26, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
VDOE will be hosting a one-day leadership conference for division leaders of fine arts instruction. The Conference will provide support for offering division-level professional learning opportunities for fine arts educators during the 2022-2023 school year. Each division should send leaders of fine arts instruction to this event. Participants will receive resources for providing professional learning for fine arts educators and a certificate of participation. This conference was previously advertised as an in-person conference, but has moved to virtual.

Save the Date: Effective Literacy Connections for Resource Teachers
This session is tentatively being planned for July 28, 2022 at 2 p.m. but is not yet finalized. Information will be updated on the Google Doc when available.
Elementary fine arts educators and supervision and administration staff are invited to attend this session of how to effectively implement literacy strategies in the resource classroom. More details will be coming soon.
VDOE Fine Arts Update
Wednesday, August 3, 2022, 4:15 - 5:00 p.m.
VDOE fine arts staff will share up-to-date information and resources for the 2022-2023 school year. This session is intended for division-level leaders of fine arts curriculum, instruction, and professional learning but is open to all fine arts educators who wish to attend. The session will be recorded.
