2022 Virginia Arts and Culture Institutes
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to offer two 2022 Virginia Arts and Culture Institutes for fine arts educators during the summer of 2022:

Southwest Virginia Music and Culture Institute - The purpose of the Institute is to provide a hands-on professional learning opportunity for music educators related to music and cultural heritage of Southwest Virginia. Participants will engage in workshops led by musicians including The Crooked Road’s Artist-in-Residence, Andrew Small, and old-time musician Emily Schaad. Experiential workshops focus on music styles such as traditional old-time and bluegrass music, folk instruments, and improvisation. Music educators will collaborate with professionals on the curation and development of instructional resources and strategies aligned to the Music Standards of Learning.

Chickahominy Tribal Arts and Culture Institute: The purpose of the Institute is to provide educators with arts and cultural classroom connections between fine arts educators and tribal arts and culture of Virginia. The Institute will provide workshops led by the Chickahominy Indian Tribe and the Chickahominy Indian Eastern Division Tribe. Experiential workshops will include topics such as beading, clay, dance, leatherwork, and storytelling and will provide educators with resources and connections to implement the Fine Arts Standards of Learning.

Save the Date: 2022 VDOE Fine Arts Leadership Conferences
VDOE will be hosting one-day leadership conferences for division leaders of fine arts instruction. Conferences will provide support for offering division-level professional learning opportunities an support for fine arts educators during the 2022-2023 school year.
Participants can choose between two dates and locations:
- Thursday, June 23, 2022 in Abingdon, Virginia
- Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in Chesterfield, Virginia.

2022 Armed Forces Day Art Contest: Students from across Virginia are invited to create works of art that represent images of “Bravery and Courage.” The Art Contest is open to all Kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) students currently enrolled in public or private schools or homeschooled in Virginia. Visitors to the website can vote on their favorite art piece in four grade categories (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12). Winners from each category will receive a gift card award and prizes, presented by McDonalds. Winners will be announced on Memorial Day, May 30, 2022.

U.S. Department of Education Nationwide Call for Student Performing Artists: The U.S. Department of Education is seeking student performing artists (such as bands/marching bands, choirs, color guards, dancers, drumlines, poets/spoken word artists, soloists, theatrical performers) currently enrolled in institutions of elementary, secondary, or post-secondary education or accredited trade schools, who exemplify resilience, diversity, and excellence and are interested in showcasing their talent, virtually or in-person, at internal and external Department-hosted events, as well as awards and recognition ceremonies, and professional development trainings that support the Department’s programs, priorities, and initiatives and social media campaigns. No formal training or experience is necessary. To share talent with us, please complete the submission form which will include instructions on how to provide us with a demonstration of your talent and other pertinent requirements. The link includes Frequently Asked Questions, submission instructions, and other related guidance. Crozet Library hosting first ACPS K-12 art show - ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - For the first time, Albemarle Public Schools is hosting a K-12 art show at the Crozet Library. Students have worked over the last few weeks to prepare an art piece - ranging from drawings to sculptures - to display at the entrance of the library.

Jamestown High makes a comeback to the stage with a little help from the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra - WILLIAMSBURG — For students in Jamestown High School’s theater program, spring has meant a return to normal — and to the stage. This week, the school’s spring musical, “Beauty & The Beast: A Broadway Musical” hit the stage for performances through Saturday. With the inclusion of the live pit orchestra, professional musicians from the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra have been on-hand to provide one-on-one coaching and advice for the students as part of the organization’s educational outreach efforts.
- During the months of March and April, Powhatan County Public Schools held their annual Youth Art Month show at the Pocahontas Landmark Center. Students from Powhatan High School will be holding their AP Art Exhibit at the War Memorial Building in the Village of Powhatan from May 16-20.

Band director from Suffolk wins Nobel Educator of Distinction award - Alvin Moore, a Suffolk resident has been recognized as a Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. Mr. Moore graduated from Lakeland High School as a proud member of its marching band. Now, he is the band director at Norview High School in Norfolk.
- Each year the NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants) awards the Best Communities for Music Education in America to school districts for their commitment to and support of music education. The following Virginia school districts earned this award for the 2021-22 school year: Arlington Public Schools, Bristol Virginia Public Schools, Hampton City Schools, Hanover County Public Schools, Harrisonburg City Public Schools, Henrico County Public Schools, King George Public Schools, Loudoun County Public Schools, Norfolk Public Schools, Powhatan County Public Schools, Prince William County Public Schools, Richmond Public Schools, Roanoke City Public Schools, Roanoke County Public Schools, Stafford County Public Schools, Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, York County School Division. Many of the school systems on this list have received this award multiple years. Congratulations and thanks for your continued support of music education.

The Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Blue Ribbon Award is given for superior performance at assessments across all ensembles in a school’s music program.
