Did You Know?  
Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow discusses the Virginia Literacy Act requiring evidence-based reading and literacy instruction in schools and teacher preparation programs. The legislation, sponsored by Delegate Carrie Coyner, R-Chesterfield and Senator Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, was approved by the 2022 Virginia General Assembly. Professional Development Opportunities to Support Best Practices for English Learner Instruction for All Educators
Multiple professional development opportunities for division and school staff (including general educators, EL teachers, leaders, counselors) who support ELs will be offered from June through December 2022Superintendent Memo 073-22 provides session descriptions, recommended audiences, registration links, and registration deadlines for the professional development opportunities. All sessions will be delivered virtually using the Zoom platform. The Office of Humanities will manage registration, coordinate delivery of materials, and provide confirmation. Special Education Teacher Support Academy- June 27-30
The goal of SETSA is to build the capacity and efficacy of early-career special education teachers by improving teacher effectiveness and reducing teacher attrition in K-12 classrooms. It will enhance the knowledge and ability to meet the needs of students with disabilities successfully.  After the Academy, ongoing support will be available for teachers and coaches through VDOE’s TTACs.  Find out more information today!

Hands-on Science Professional Development for Workshops
These free workshops are sponsored by Virginia Tech College of Science and the Fralin Life Sciences. They are open for science teachers of grades 8-12 and will be held June 27-29. Capacity is limited. See VT for more information.

Board Approved Standards of Learning for Physical Education and Health Education SOL Curriculum Framework
On March 17, 2022, the Virginia Board of Education approved and adopted the proposed revisions to the Physical Education Standards of Learning  and the Health Education SOL Curriculum Framework.  A series of blended, virtual, and in-person professional learning opportunities will be offered that include, but are not limited to, the Adapted Physical Education Content Teaching Academy (June 27-30) and the Healthy Kids Healthy Virginia Health & Physical Activity Institute (July 11-13). Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation's 2022 Summer Teacher Institute
Get ready for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution at this Institute July 11-14. This four-day, all expenses paid professional development opportunity is specifically designed for upper elementary and middle school teachers. Participants will take part in immersive learning experiences and collaborate with fellow teachers to develop lessons for students to build 21st-century skills. Find out more information today!

Virginia Forest Association Workshops
The Virginia Forest Association has several low-cost workshop for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The workshops on-site and virtual. Participants will receive activities that can be use with students.

Updated Health Guidance for K-12 Public Schools
Superintendent Memo 081-22 provides guidance on health mitigation strategies  for K-12 schools and preschool programs within K-12 schools. This document supersedes all previous guidance issued by the VDOE or the Virginia Department of Health. In addition to this guidance, there have been two recent executive and legislative actions related to masking that do have the effect of law. See Superintendent Memo 081-22 for all the details.

Board Approved Standards of Learning for Driver Education
On March 17, 2022, the Virginia Board of Education approved and adopted the  proposed revisions to the Driver Education Standards of Learning. These Standards define the skills and competencies necessary to become a proficient user of the highway transportation system. Learning with NASA is Out of this World-April 26
NASA’s Artemis mission is inspiring students, in partnership with LEGO Education, by offering free Build to Launch Curriculum to schools nationwide, giving students a chance to learn from and interact with our nation’s top aeronautics leaders as they progress towards a first launch in 2022.  Join the U.S. Department of Education and NASA to learn more about the Artemis mission and how to spark joy in classrooms.

VSGC Private Pilot Ground School
This school is hosted by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium is a free online, semester-length course for Virginia high school students. Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for flight scholarships that will provide 40 hours of flight training. Application deadline is May 13.

2022 Golden Nib Writing Contest
The Virginia Writing Club is now accepting submissions for the 2022 Golden Nib Writing Contest for Teens. Submissions will be accepted through April 29. Winners will be announced June 2. All entries must be submitted online.

Mini PhD Camp
This Camp is a free virtual summer camp for students in grades 8-10 starting September 2022 who are interested in STEM. The deadline for applying is April 30.

VPM Science Matters
The VPM Science Matters Facebook Chat will be on Thursday nights at 8:30 p.m. following the premier of Season 4 of UNTAMED April 21 – June 9.

Virginia Council for Learning Disabilities Annual Symposium

April is Month of the Military Child
Throughout the nation and Commonwealth educators and communities will take time in April to recognize the contributions of children whose parents serve in the military. Sample activities and materials are available to assist schools in planning their Month of the Military Child celebrations. Additional information and resources about military children and Virginia public schools are also available from VDOE.

April is Arab American Heritage Month
The Virginia General Assembly issued House Joint Resolution No. 82. The Resolution honors the contributions of Arab Americans who enrich Virginia’s educational system, governance, economy, culture and community. Additionally, the Department of State is honoring the contributions of this diverse community to America this month. Resources are available from museums such as National Endowment for the HumanitiesArab American National Museum-Smithsonian Affiliate, and National Museum of American History.  


VIRGINIA COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS

George Mason University Math and Literacy Coaching Institute
Mason Coaching Institute for Math and Literacy will be held on April 30 at 9 a.m. This half-day event will offer two tracks of coaching workshops for specialists and coaches to explore recent developments in schools and instruction, along with time for networking and much-needed collegial conversation. Reading/Literacy Program Virtual Open House Events
This is a new five semester graduate program in Reading/Literacy Education, leading to the Reading Specialist Endorsement from Virginia Tech School of Education. Learn about the faculty, program, costs, and resources and join upcoming information sessions offered at 5:30 p.m. on April 14 or April 28.

Reading Specialist Endorsement Program
William & Mary offers a post-professional online certificate for teachers who currently hold a master’s degree but would like to add a reading specialist endorsement. It is a 21-credit program, offered in 7-week terms over four semesters. More information and an online application is available now.
