Did You Know? 
Nominations for the 2023 Mary V. Bicouvaris Virginia Teacher of the Year Program! This award honors teachers who represent the best in teaching in the Commonwealth of Virginia and across the nation. It is open to all pre-kindergarten through grade 12 teachers, employed in a VA public or accredited nonpublic school, including school librarians, guidance counselors, and reading specialists. See  Superintendent's Memo 052-22 for details, directions, and application. The application packet is due by May 27 to Teacher.Education@doe.virginia.gov.

Nominations for the 2022 SOL Item and Test Review Committees 
The Office of Student Assessment is seeking nominations for the 2022 Standards of Learning Item and Test Review Committees. Committees for Math, Reading, and Science will be held during July. The Special Test Forms Review Committee will be responsible for reviewing SOL test items on the Braille and large-print test forms for students who are visually impaired.  Committee applicants for the Special Test Forms Review Committee should be educators with expertise in the instruction of students with visual impairments and experience with the administration of Braille and large-print test forms. VCTM Annual Conference
The Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference will be held virtually on March 18, beginning with an evening keynote and continue on March 19, with a full day of concurrent sessions. Keynote speakers include Ron Lancaster and Mandy Jansen. Visit the VCTM for details and registration information.

VIBE Workshops: Counselors, Extracurricular Advisors, Athletics Coaches
Counselors, extracurricular advisors, and athletics coaches will be able to build and edit free templates and learn how to best organize their school’s Canvas hub for their needs. Registration is required for this three-part series. Options:
-Workshop One: March 17 at noon
-Workshop Two: Option A: March 23 at 4 p.m. or Option B: March 24 at noon
-Workshop Three: Option A: March 30 at 4 p.m. or Option B: March 31 at noon

National Weather Service Spring Seasonal Safety Campaign
Resources include websites, articles, social media, infographics, videos and more. Topics include the weather hazards most common during the current season, such as air quality, beach hazards, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. Resources are also available in Spanish.

Journey into Teaching Academy 
The Journey into Teaching Academy is a yearlong professional development initiative for teachers completing their second year as a provisionally licensed special education teacher. This May 2022-May 2023 program will include a virtual orientation on May 19 at 4:30 p.m. and a summer academy, July 25-28 in Richmond. This is a competitive process requiring a Teacher Application and Administrator's Recommendation. Completed documents are due to VDOE by April 1. Once applications are reviewed, notification will be emailed by April 12. Contact Dr. Teresa Lee, VDOE Office of SPED Instructional Services, or Kristin Williams-Faus, Office of STEM and Innovation with any questions.

Leading Ed Forum 2022-March 23
This Forum will be held on March 23 from 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at the New College Institute, Martinsville with a virtual option. Topics include leadership, cybersecurity, student data privacy, digital accessibility, hybrid learning, trends, and more. This event is for school division instruction and technology leaders including chief technology officers/directors, network administrators, ITRT, Superintendents, and staff that support instructional technology. Save the Bay Photo Contest
The contest highlights the Chesapeake Bay, its watershed's rivers and streams through the eyes of those who enjoy them. Deadline for submission is April 1.  

Gilder Lehrman Hosts 2022 National History Teacher of the Year
Nominations for any eligible K-12 teacher are due April 30 and must be submitted on the Gilder Lehrman website. Nominations can be made by any individual who is familiar with the teacher’s work, including students, parents of students, colleagues, etc. Nominated teachers receive an email notification with instructions on how to submit all materials to be considered for the State History Teacher of the Year. Nominate an outstanding history teacher today!

Dominion Energy Solar for Students
This program is being offered for schools in the Dominion Energy service area in VA. In partnership with The National Energy Development Project, the program will provide students with a photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electric power and an online monitoring tool that will provide real-time data on the system’s activity and the amount of electricity generated. Applications are due on March 30.

VMSA Annual Conference
The Virginia Middle School Association will be holding its annual conference at James Madison University in Harrisonburg on March 24. Middle-level educators from around the state will gather to share celebrations, experiences, and best practices with each other. Come and listen to the Keynote Speaker, Mr. John Hodge. Nanoscience Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers
This is an opportunity to learn and explore nanomaterials and nanoscience related concepts. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until May 15. Sessions include both an in-person and virtual option to extend the opportunity to teachers across the US. Teachers can receive a stipend and classroom materials.

National Youth Science Camp-Applications Due March 31
This STEM program designed to recognize some of the nation’s rising leaders and provide opportunities to engage with industry professionals. Applicants must be in their senior year of high school. Two delegates will be selected to represent each of the 50 States. Applications are due March 31.
