Onward and Upward: Grant Request for Proposals from Institutions of Higher Education This grant opportunity for IHE will provide support for K-12 literacy and mathematics instruction to address unfinished learning across Virginia through the development of high-quality, evidence-based instructional resources, materials, and professional development. Appalachia Regional Education Laboratory Community Math Night Facilitators’ Toolkit REL developed this Toolkit to help elementary school educators plan and implement the Community Math Night program to engage families in interactive math activities, build positive math attitudes, and create a community of caring adults to support math learning. The Toolkit includes planning and resources, relevant research, step-by-step instructions and printable materials for the interactive activities. REL is a part of the Institute of Ed. Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Ed.
Proposals for Summer 2022 National Children and Youth Garden Symposium This Symposium brings together educators, landscape architects, designers, and people from around the country who are all working to engage children with gardens and the natural world surrounding them. The proposal deadline is January 7 and presenters will be informed by January 31.
VSGC Liftoff 2022 The Virginia Space Grant Consortium will sponsor one Virginia teacher from grade 5-12 for a summer professional development institute in Houston, Texas. The program will feature presentations by scientists and engineers, tours of NASA and Space Center, hands-on, inquiry-based classroom activities aligned to educational standards, and more. Applications are due March 7.
VDOE Desmos Activity Log Updated with Additional Activities! The VDOE Desmos Activity Log (XLSX) has been updated with additional activities to support the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning. The Log now contains a tab with activities for each grade-level/mathematics course from Kindergarten through Algebra II. Each grade level sheet includes a list of SOL-aligned Desmos activities with a brief description and direct link to the activity. Check it out today!
Shenandoah Valley Writing Project Invitational Leadership Institute This Institute is open to any Pre-kindergarten-University educator and will be held entirely online from the end of June through July 2022. At the Institute, participants will examine issues in the teaching of writing, improve the use of writing to deepen and extend learning in all curricular areas, study research in the field, and more. Virginia Humanities K-12 Educator Fellowships Applications are being accepted for six humanities educators to join a new fellowship scheduled to begin in March 2022. The work is virtual and will take place over a nine month period. Fellows will receive a stipend, a 360-camera, two relevant books for research, and unique opportunities with specialists and Virginia Humanities staff. Applications close on January 7.
Virtual Hokie BugFest Website Virginia Tech has a new Educators' Guide to accompany the Virtual Hokie BugFest website. Hokie BugFest is an annual outreach event that explores all things entomology. The K-12 Guide is a roadmap for how to use the online festival in the classroom. It categorizes all of the festival content according to age, SOL, and topic of interest.
Grammar Reimagined Workshop - July 27 In this workshop, Longwood Associate Professor Dr. Sean Ruday, will lead discussions about teaching grammar in the context of writing instruction, using mentor texts, and enhancing student metacognition of grammatical concepts and writing strategies. This workshop will be held at Zehmer Hall at the University of Virginia. More details, including cost, times, and registration information are available.
National STEM Scholar Program This Program is seeking middle school science teachers who are interested in professional development that include hands-on activities, connecting with speakers and thought leaders in STEM education; learning with skilled science educators, and developing a creative Challenge Project for classroom implementation. Each Scholar will receive a Chromebook and funding for Challenge Project supplies and materials. Applications are due February 1.
Virginia Opera’s Newest Amazing Opera, Earth to Kenzie is Available Kenzie is a fifth grader in a challenging world; sometimes so challenging that she finds solace in another world - that of video games. This story addresses real modern-day problems of poverty, homelessness and self-worth. Virginia Opera has prepared a 5-minute preview and a teacher resource companion handbook. Virginia Children’s Engineering Council Workshop The Virginia Children’s Engineering Council will sponsor best practice workshops on February 8-10, for Pre-K-5 teachers. This virtual convention will feature hands-on experiences in engineering, design technology, and digital learning. Workshops will be designed for 45-minutes. Proposals are currently being accepted for pre-recorded sessions.
