Did You Know?  
Indigenous Peoples' Day! Governor Northam proclaimed the 2nd Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day calling all Virginians to celebrate the rich culture and the resilience of our tribal communities and promotes reconciliation, healing, and continued friendship with Virginia’s Indian tribes. This observance coincides with Columbus Day in the Commonwealth. Later this month, Virginia will open Machicomoco State Park, the Commonwealth’s 40th state park and the first devoted to interpreting the experiences and history of Virginia’s Indian tribes and the Algonquin nation.

Virtual Virginia Let’s VIBE Webinars
Virginia public school educators are invited to attend the Let's VIBE series of free webinars and workshops throughout the fall. The professional learning series focuses on different themes in virtual and blended education and is presented by VVA in partnership with Canvas and the Virginia Society for Technology in Education. Registration is required to attend. Recordings of the sessions will be available in the Virtual Virginia Professional Learning Network (PLN). If the PLN is not visible on the Canvas Dashboard, you may self-enroll.  

American Revolution Resource Survey
What tools would help you educate students about the American Revolution?  What more would you and your students like to learn about the American Revolution? The purpose of this survey is to provide information about what resources are needed to integrate into existing lessons to educate students about the American Revolution. UnisonEDU Virtual Conference-October 23
This free conference will feature a variety of sessions with four keynote speakers and over 30 sessions throughout the day. The topics range from STEM, coaching, first year teachers, creation tools, SPED, and SEL. Register now. Bulk registration is also available for schools and divisions.

Strong Men and Women in Virginia History Contest
High school students in Virginia are invited to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in Dominion Energy and the Library of Virginia’s Strong Men and Women in Virginia History student contest. Projects are due by December 31.

VKRP Survey Participation!
All who participated in the fall VKRP assessments have the opportunity to have their voices heard! Teachers and instructional leaders received a unique link for the survey via their division emails this week. All teacher respondents will be entered into a drawing late December to win a $50 gift card. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes. If there are any questions regarding the survey, please contact the VKRP team.  

Dominion Energy Coastal VA Offshore Wind Virtual Energy Workshop
Presented in partnership with The NEED Project, this free educator workshop will take place on November 6. Participants will receive SOL aligned classroom resources that target four different grade levels. Register by October 28. For more information, email Wendi Moss or call 1-800-875-5029.

VDOE Webinar: Utilizing Data to Maximize Literacy Instruction in the 2021-2022 Academic Year
Join VDOE English staff and Assessment staff to explore using SDBQ data from the Fall 2021 Growth Assessments and formative and summative classroom data to support literacy instruction in K-12 classrooms.  Presenters will delve into available resources to demonstrate how to intentionally select texts and skills for deeper learning and purposeful, targeted instruction. VDOE Science 2021-22 Webinars
The VDOE Science Team will hold monthly science teacher webinars held on the third Wednesday of each month at 4:00PM. Using the link provided, participants will choose the date to attend these virtual events using the dropdown menu. Participants will need to repeat the registration process for each webinar they wish to attend during the 2021-22 academic year. The next webinar will be October 20 at 4 p.m., Diving into the 2018 Science Curriculum Framework.  

Professional Learning Opportunities 
The VCU School of Education is offering the series Becoming an Antiracist Educator and Strategies to Promote a Culturally Diverse PreK-12 Teaching Workforce. Registration deadline is October 22.  

Structuring Effective Mathematics Intervention 
These sessions will build on the information shared in previous webinars of this series. Sessions will highlight how to differentiate mathematics instruction using evidence from formative assessment to identify student strengths, as well as provide actionable ideas on how to effectively structure and implement student intervention. Note: sessions from Oct. 18 are repeated on Oct. 25.  Register:

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Applications-Due October 15
Applications for expert U.S. K-12 educators to carry out 2-6-week educational projects abroad in 2022 are now being accepted! Projects focus on subjects like STEM, TEFL, ICT, and learner assessment, and will take place at host institutions in Colombia, Israel, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Uganda, and Vietnam. Selected participants will support schools, colleges, government ministries, and/or educational nongovernmental organizations. UVA MEd-Reading Education Program Info Session
Register for the October 19 information session to learn about the fully online, newly revised MEd in Reading Education program. Each course has been aligned with the science of reading and is designed to develop knowledge about effective and efficient reading assessment instruction at both the elementary and secondary levels. 

USED Green Ribbon School Program
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognizes schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health, foster wellness and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement. The deadline to apply is December 10 at 5 p.m. Find out more about the USED Green Ribbon Schools program from VDOE.

October as Disability History and Awareness Month  
Over a decade ago, a committed group of youth with disabilities requested that Virginia officially recognize DHAM. The youth also developed a credo: “Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and equal opportunities for all.”  See VDOE for variety of resources that can be used to promote and highlight DHAM in Virginia.
