2021 National Blue Ribbon School Honors
RICHMOND — Seven Virginia public schools are among the 325 schools named today as 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors high performing schools and schools making exemplary progress toward closing achievement gaps.
The Virginia public schools recognized as 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools are as follows:
- Greendale Elementary School in Washington County.
- Elydale Middle School in Lee County.
- Meadows of Dan Elementary School in Patrick County.
- Sangster Elementary School in Fairfax County.
- Northern Shores Elementary School in Suffolk.
- Windsor Oaks Elementary School in Virginia Beach.
- Mary G. Porter Traditional School in Prince William County.
“These schools epitomize the determination of our commonwealth’s public schools to maximize the potential of all students,” Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane said. “I congratulate the success of the students and faculty at each of these schools and their unwavering commitment to excellence — even during the extraordinary circumstances of the last two years.”
National Blue Ribbon Schools are selected based on one of two criteria: performance on state assessments or progress over five years closing achievement gaps.
Elydale Middle, Greendale Elementary, Mary G. Porter Traditional, Meadows of Dan Elementary and Sanger Elementary were recognized for overall achievement. Northern Shores Elementary and Windsor Oaks Elementary earned blue ribbons for progress toward closing achievement gaps.
“This year’s cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “I commend all our Blue Ribbon honorees for working to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs.”
The National Blue Ribbon Schools award recognizes the efforts of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 39th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed approximately 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools.
