Fine Arts Leadership Professional Learning Community (PLC) Meeting - In the Spring of 2021, the Virginia Department of Education hosted a series of four meetings for division leadership who oversee fine arts instructional programs. Leaders may include a division-level instructional staff and/or a lead teacher identified by division-level instructional staff. This meeting series fostered collaboration among divisions in order to provide support for outstanding fine arts programs statewide. In order to continue these conversations, the VDOE will be hosting several informal opportunities for fine arts division leadership to hear from the VDOE fine arts program staff on current topics facing art education, as well as an opportunity to collaborate as a professional learning community. These 1.5 hour sessions will begin with a brief introduction and information sharing, followed by PLC breakout groups, and will conclude with a whole-group closing discussion. The first meeting will be held virtually on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Register here.

Mending Walls in K-12: Teaching Empathy and Creative Collaboration - On September 14, 2021, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Hamilton Glass, Richmond artist and founder of the Mending Walls project, and Partners in the Arts, an integrated education program at the University of Richmond, are collaborating to offer an online workshop for educators with the support of VPM. Mending Walls is a groundbreaking public art project in Richmond, Virginia that aims to establish empathy and connection through authentic conversations and the collaborative creation of art. In this free, online, two-hour session, artists will model and engage educators in the processes used during Mending Walls to build empathy through discourse and merge diverse approaches to painting to create a collaborative piece. Educators will explore prompts and strategies based on how the artists worked through difficult conversations about race, status, and their personal experience. Participants will then discover how the outcomes of those conversations were utilized to incorporate artists’ differences, and similarities, to create something new for the community. Spots for this teacher workshop are limited, so please register only if you will be able to take part from 7:00 pm- 9:00 pm on September 14. A recording of the workshop will be shared publicly after the event. Register online at this LINK.
