Did You Know?
Resources and Supports for Teaching About 9/11  Twenty years ago this month, America withstood one of the hardest days in our nation’s history. As educators, we strive to teach and prepare our students to be informed citizens, and this month that may include the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Instructional resources and supports are available to create safe spaces for students to engage with this content in appropriate ways.
9/11 Memorial & Museum: This site offers public programs exploring 9/11’s continuing impact in the world, online programs for students and teachers, and youth and families. The online resources offer content for learning more.
Library of Congress (LOC): The Witness and Response: September 11 Acquisitions at the LOC collection includes original material such as prints, photographs, drawings, poems, eye-witness accounts, headlines, magazines, songs, books, maps, videotapes, and films.
National Education Association: This site provides lessons and resources to help provide context for examining events before, during, and after the attacks. Includes lesson, background information, and approaches to teaching.
VDOE Bullying Resources: When discussing sensitive and emotional topics such as the commemoration of 9/11, teachers should be prepared for tough questions and set clear guidelines for appropriate conversation. Schools have an obligation create a “bully-free” environment and VDOE offers resources to support educators and school divisions.

New State Growth Assessments to Measure Student Recovery and Progress
Read all about the new state growth assessments! Students in grades 3-8 this fall will be the first to take new growth assessments to determine baselines for measuring individual academic progress in reading and mathematics during the school year. The new tests are mandated by legislation (House Bill 2027 and Senate Bill 1357) approved by the 2021 General Assembly. For 2021-2022, the legislation calls for the administration of fall growth assessments in reading and math, in addition to the end-of-year Standards of Learning tests students will take next spring. For this year only, the fall growth assessments are based on content from the previous grade level to assist in the identification of unfinished learning from 2020-2021 due to the pandemic. More information on the new fall growth assessments is available on the VDOE Growth Assessments web page.
