VDOE Virtual Family Literacy Night will be held August 31 from 6-9p.m. Share the news with your families and community! Join the VDOE to kick off the 2021-2022 school year as we engage families and communities in fostering a love for literacy! Choose from a variety of informative sessions hosted by VDOE specialists and coordinators as well as educators and community groups from across the Commonwealth. Gain resources and supports that will allow literacy and learning to flourish at home and throughout your community.
Looking for Virginia Young Poets in the Community-Due October 15 Students, what matters to you most in our world today? Virginia needs your voice to build a better world so apply to represent your region as a Young Poet in the Community! Virginia Poet Laureate Luisa A. Igloria, with panelists from the Poetry Society of Virginia, will select Young Poets in the Community (one elementary school, one middle school, two high school, one college) in each of the six Poetry Society of Virginia regions. Submissions are due by October 15 including an entry form with information from the school and work samples. Email questions to vayoungpoetsinthecommunity@gmail.com.
Humanities in Class Free Webinar Series for All Teachers Registration for the 2021-22 Humanities in Class Webinar Series is open. Over forty sessions are scheduled featuring scholars and experts from across the humanities. Each live webinar is 90 minutes and includes resources and readings from the scholar. Participants can earn 5 professional development credits. The series is free, and teachers at all levels and subjects are invited to join.

Training Opportunity: Re-enrollment–Beyond the Basics The Regulations Governing the Re-enrollment of Students Committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice, 8 VAC 20-660-10 et. seq., presents the procedures for re-enrollment of students into the public schools when they have been in the custody of the juvenile justice system and receiving instruction through local and regional detention centers and the Department of Juvenile Justice. To assist school divisions in satisfying the requirements of the regulations, VDOE will offer a webinar on September 8. See Superintendent's Memo 232-21 for details.
Nominations for the 2021 Standards of Learning Special Test Forms Review Committee VDOE is accepting nominations through September 17, 2021, for participation in the 2021 Standards of Learning (SOL) Special Test Forms Review Committee. All individuals who wish to serve on this committee, including those who have previously served, must submit an online application found on the Assessment Committee Application Processing System. Approximately twelve members will be selected. The application will require a professional reference and school division approval. Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required parts of the application are complete. See Superintendent's Memo 223-21 for more information and application details.

2022 United States Senate Youth Program-Applications due Sept. 24 VDOE will select two student delegates to represent Virginia in the United States Senate Youth Program sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Each delegate will receive a $10,000 scholarship and an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the week of March 5-12, 2022. Superintendent's Memo 222-21 has all the details.
Professional Learning Webinar Series VASCD is sponsoring a variety of professional learning opportunities for Virginia educators through webinar series with a variety of timely topics. Presenter Eric Carbaugh will share tools for the use of performance tasks and rubrics. Session Series: Sept 22, Oct. 6, 22, and Nov 10. Disruptive Thinking in Our Classrooms-Preparing Learners for Their Future. Presenter Eric Sheninger will share how to prepare students for success now and in the future. September 30: Ongoing Assessment and Effective Feedback to Drive Learning. Presenter Eric Carbaugh explores how to help students learn to persist, reflect, and strengthen their skills using feedback and formative assessment. October 5: Don’t Kick Me Out - Invite Me In! (Discipline Through an Equity Lens). Presenters Casey Roberts and Kambar Khoshaba highlight practices that emphasize self-regulation and social-emotional learning over exclusion.

Virginia Academy of Science Mentorship Initiative This mentorship initiative matches middle and high school classrooms with scientist mentors to guide students through the design and implementation of a long-term research project. VAS is looking to recruit both mentors and middle and high school teachers who would like their students to participate in a virtually-driven long-term research project.
