Did You Know? 
On July 21, 2021, the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Education released new guidance for PreK-12 schools for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. The Interim Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in Virginia PreK-12 Schools reinforces the importance of in-person learning and supports school divisions in making decisions on masking and other prevention measures, as informed by local data and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. VDOE English Office Annual SOL Conferences-August 2021
The VDOE English Office will be offering their annual SOL conferences in a virtual webinar series this August. Conferences will utilize a train-the-trainer model to provide professional development that focuses on engaging instruction aligned to the 2017 SOL and Curriculum Framework. Elementary sessions will focus on evidenced based practices for early reading instruction, scaffolding grade level texts, approaches to interdisciplinary literacy, and developing/implementing local performance assessments. Secondary sessions will highlight pedagogical practices for middle school reading and writing, providing student agency through inquiry based instruction, the development of authentic learning experiences, and integrating the Standards for a more comprehensive approach to instruction. All sessions will run from 6-9 p.m.  Register today!

Healthy Back to School COVID-19 Website
The Healthy Back to School COVID-19 website provides resources to help families keep children healthy this summer and prepare them to go back to school in the fall, whether in-person or online! The site offers recommendations and policies about COVID-19, immunizations, and other information including child well visits, routine oral health, and mental health resources for your child. A Back to School Checklist is available to help prepare for the new school year! 

VDOE’s Mathematics Webinar Series August-October
Addressing Unfinished Learning in the Mathematics Classroom - Building Bridges for Student Success is being offered for teachers from August through October 2021. In the first webinar of this series, join the VDOE mathematics team to learn how you can utilize VDOE resources to assist you in both long-term and day-to-day planning for instruction. Learn how the VDOE mathematics tracking logs, bridging documents, and Just in Time Mathematics Quick Checks can support effective instruction and assist in building bridges for your students' success. Statewide 2021-2022 Virginia Assessment Program Test Administration
Dates
 are now available on the VDOE Test Administration webpage and detailed within Superintendent's Memo 182-21. It is important to share this information with appropriate personnel so that Standards of Learning (SOL) testing and other activities for the 2021-2022 school year may be scheduled without conflicts.

Virtual Learning Support Toolkit
VDOE's Office of STEM and Innovation partnered with Old Dominion University  Center for Implementation and Evaluation of Education Systems for new resources. They have developed a series of asynchronous learning modules, videos, and resources to support the effective delivery of virtual instruction. The website, named Virtual Learning Support Toolkit, offers research-based guidance to support school leaders, educators, and key staff in navigating both blended and fully online environments. Guidance for One-year High School Extensions for Certain Students with Disabilities                                                                                                    VDOE has developed guidance for local school divisions in response to language provided in the 2021 Appropriation Act. As a result of the pandemic, a student with a disability eligible under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA), who turned 22 after September 20, 2020, and was scheduled to complete high school in the spring of 2021, shall be given the option for an extension to attend high school for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year.  Additional information is available in Superintendent’s Memo 124-21.

NASA TechRise Student Challenge and Educator Workshop
This challenge is for students to design an experiment to test on a suborbital rocket or high-altitude balloon. Teams of students in grades 6-12 can submit ideas through August 18. Competition winners will receive a prize to build their payloads to be assigned on a NASA-sponsored commercial suborbital flight. NASA TechRise Student Challenge educator workshops, on July 28 and repeated Aug. 11, will dive into the basics of electronics, coding, and designing for flight.

Research-Based Strategies for Remote and Hybrid Instruction

VAST 2021 Annual Professional Development Institute  
Registration is open for the Virginia Association of Science Teachers Institute which includes onsite and virtual sessions. The virtual institute will take place November 16-18. There will be an add-on in-person PDI PLUS in Harrisonburg on November 19-20. Register today!

Digital Devices in the Classroom: Health and Safety Guidelines
In January 2020, Virginia legislators passed House Bill 817 requiring the VDOE, in collaboration with the Department of Health and medical professional societies, to develop health and safety guidelines related to the use of digital devices in the classroom. The guidelines and infographic are posted on the VDOE Virtual Teaching and Learning website. School divisions are encouraged to share this information with school personnel and post the information widely through web portals, learning management systems, and social media platforms.
