Inclusive Practices in the World Language Classroom - Summer Mini-Institute July 13
The Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) Office of Special Education Instructional Services, in partnership with the Office of Humanities, will sponsor a collaborative special education-world language education mini-Institute on Inclusive Practices in the World Language Classroom.
The Institute will take place on July 13 from 9:00 a.m. – noon via Zoom and is designed to address instructional strategies and considerations for students with disabilities in the world language classroom. World Language coordinators, classroom teachers, and resource or lead personnel in this specialty area are the primary target audience. The Institute is free and will include a keynote address from Dr. Katy Arnett.
Register online through Virginia Tech Office of Continuing and Professional Education. The registration deadline is Thursday, July 1, 2021.
World Language Wednesdays: Implementing the 2021 World Language Standards of Learning
The focus of the summer 2021 World Language Wednesdays will be on implementing the revised 2021 World Language Standards of Learning. Register in advance for the series, and then join in on any you wish. It is not required to join any specific dates or number of sessions.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Each session will be followed by a short evaluation that will generate a professional development certificate on completion.
Schedule
- June 2, 9, and 16: Implementation of the SOL in curriculum, assessment, lesson planning, and cross-division collaboration.
- July 14: Repeat of Introduction to SOL for new teachers, supervisors and other who missed the first session.
- August 11 and 25: Supporting division and classroom implementation of the WL SOL

International Education
Request a Partner School from France
As part of our agreement with the Académie de Reims in France, Virginia schools may request to be paired with a partner school in France. The partnership activities will be determined by the schools after they are paired, and every effort is made to pair schools with similar interests. Partnerships may or may not include student or teacher exchanges as determined by the schools. Virginia schools may select projects geared for French language classes, or to any other content area class with an interest in building global ties and perspectives. To request a partnership to begin in the 2021-2022 school year, fill out this school profile form that includes contact information and project interests. Please be sure to obtain administrative approval from your school before you submit the request.
Virtual Exchange Opportunities
The Stevens Initiative is an international effort to build global competence and career readiness skills for young people in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa by enhancing the field of virtual exchange. They are offering options for participation in their virtual exchange including: -Join a Program options are for those interested in having new partners (educators, schools, districts, postsecondary, etc.) join their programs. -Mobilize Youth Participation options are to help educators and administrators share opportunities with their students on open-enrollment virtual exchange programs.

New Research Study- Sustaining Dual Language Immersion: Partner Language Outcomes in a Statewide Program
This large-scale Utah DLI proficiency study was recently published in the Modern Language Journal. The statewide study investigated whether students’ growth in a non-English DLI partner language sustained into the secondary level, to what degree students met performance benchmarks for these partner languages, and whether targeted outcomes were attained during program expansion. The article concludes with a discussion of curricular and policy implications.
