Virginia Health and Physical Activity Virtual Institute, July 12-14 VDOE and the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance extend an invitation to all administrators and teachers to attend the fully virtual Healthy Kids, Healthy Virginia 2021 Health and Physical Activity Institute. The 2021 Institute will provide opportunities for sharing effective teaching and learning practices that support the whole child approach to education, ensuring that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged with the goal of improving the health, educational performance, and long-term success for all students in Virginia’s schools.The Institute will feature several nationally acclaimed educators, National and State Teachers of the Year, and a variety of engaging workshops and general sessions. New VDOE SOL English Instructional Support Virginia SOLTracking Logs for grades Kindergarten through English 12 have been developed to assist teachers with determining which standards students have had sufficient exposure and experience with prior to the COVID-19 school interruption and to make decisions regarding when and how experience with new standards might occur moving forward. Each log includes space for teachers to check off the standards that had been addressed sufficiently during the 2020-2021 academic year and those which have not yet been addressed by the end of the school year. Leaders and educators are encouraged to use the VDOE progression charts, Comprehensive Literacy webinar series, Comprehensive Literacy English Instructional Plans, and Assessment Supports webinar series for additional instructional support.
Social- Emotional Learning and Support for English Learners-May 17 ELs who enroll in VA schools arrive with a wide range of experiences. Some have experienced trauma and interrupted education, and many are adjusting to a new culture in addition to learning a new language. Panelists from the elementary, middle, and high school levels, as well as central office administrators, will discuss the challenges affecting students and their families. Participants will gain a toolkit of resources, strategies, and supports that help ELs develop social-emotional skills.
Public Comments on the Social Emotional Learning Standards In response to House Bill (HB 753), enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, VDOE established a uniform definition of social emotional learning (SEL) and developed guidance standards for SEL for all public school students in grades kindergarten through twelfth in the Commonwealth.The VDOE is soliciting public comments on the Social Emotional Learning Standards, which are attached to this memo. The proposed Standards will be available on Virginia Regulatory Town Hall Public Forums, and comments can be made online from April 26-May 25. Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute: From Context to Classroom Online- July 12-23 This opportunity is open to teachers who have never completed the Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute. Historian-lead lectures and learn about practices and resources that you can use in the classroom when teaching the Holocaust. Sessions focus on the Holocaust’s historical background and pedagogy which link to the SOL requirements. Successful participants may earn up to 45 recertification points. The application fee will be reimbursed with successful completion of all class requirements.

ELD Standards Framework 2020 Edition: Collaborating to Create New Instructional Support Resources Continued This session a continuation of a March 29 work group, but you did not need to attend the first session to join the next ones. The May 11 session is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The first half of the session will provide a review and overview of major parts of WIDA and Virginia’s adopted new ELD Standards Framework. The second half will be dedicated to working in smaller groups to make connections between grade-level SOLs and ELD Standards. If you attended the first session in March, you may wish to join just before 4 p.m. to participate in the small groups.
