National School Social Work Week- March 7-13 School social workers are vital in supporting the whole child and addressing students’ social, emotional, physical, and environmental needs to optimize their learning. Military Children Poetry Showcase The Virginia War Memorial announces a virtual poetry showcase, Through Our Eyes , in honor of the Month of the Military Child and National Poetry Month in April. Poetry will be accepted from Virginia students of all ages whose parent(s) are serving or have served in the military. The prompt for this year's showcase is "What I love about being a military child." Submissions due March 1 through March 31.

Spanish-Speaking Student Led Webinar Encourage your Spanish-speaking students in grades 6-12 to join this student-led webinar on April 14 at 2:30 p.m. A team of Virginia high school Spanish-speaking students will present their service learning program, educational experiences and share advice about planning for after high school. The majority of the session will be conducted in Spanish.

Sketchnoting in Secondary History Courses to Support ELs Learn about using the sketchnoting strategy as a way to support and engage English Learners within your secondary History courses. Join your peers on April 5 at 4 p.m. for the Sketchnoting for Comprehensible Input for ELs in History Courses webinar and learn about using graphic representations of content for making grade level content accessible for students learning English. This is open to all teachers to learn and apply strategies in their classrooms.
PBL for ELs: Authentic Engagement in Science In this session, participants will learn strategies for differentiating instruction and assessment to engage ELs of all levels in science content classes. While the examples shared are specific to high school science, the ideas for strategies and examples can be applied to any class and grade-level. Join your peers on April 9 at 4 p.m. to learn about engaging ELs in hands-on and project-based learning for science.
Nominations for Career Success Stars in CTE-Nominations Due April 16 The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education is seeking nominations of former CTE students in their 20s and 30s who qualify for recognition as one of the Commonwealth’s brightest Career Success Stars. The individual success stories will be featured as video profiles on the VDOE website highlighting how CTE programs provide skills for career success. There will also be a featured story representing an active military personnel. Selection considerations will include diverse representation by gender, race/ethnicity, and statewide regional locations. School divisions’ CTE administrators will be provided this information and the nomination link to distribute to their schools. See Superintendent’s Memo 034-21 for additional details.
VDOT Resources The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for building, maintaining and operating roads, bridges and tunnels across Virginia. Different jobs at VDOT require a combination of science, art, technology, language arts, mathematics, and history. Examples of these community helpers include scientists, archaeologists, photographers, computer engineers, and safety service patrollers. Resources are available from VDOT for students in the early grades with safety signs through secondary STEM outreach opportunities.

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Teacher Institute This free institute is for upper elementary and middle school teachers from July 12 – 15 at Jamestown Settlement, Williamsburg. The focus will be on 17th century Virginia history and cultures that converged at Jamestown. Participants will explore primary sources and collaborate with fellow teachers to develop lessons and performance tasks to use in the classroom. Earn professional development credits.
