National School Social Work Week- March 7-13 School social workers are vital in supporting the whole child and addressing students’ social, emotional, physical, and environmental needs to optimize their learning. Additional information on key roles that school social workers play can be found on the VDOE School Social Work Services webpage. Ideas for promoting and celebrating School Social Work Week are available at School Social Work Association of America. VDOE invites local school divisions to honor and recognize the contributions of school social workers and the services they provide to students, families, administrators, educators, and communities.
Science for English Learners Join VDOE March 22 for an interactive presentation focused on building from students current language and science skills and understandings. This session will share strategies for promoting meaning-making and authentic language use as a way to scaffold up for rigorous science learning and discourse.
Military Children Poetry Showcase The Virginia War Memorial announces a virtual poetry showcase, Through Our Eyes , in honor of the Month of the Military Child and National Poetry Month in April. Poetry will be accepted from Virginia students of all ages whose parent(s) are serving or have served in the military. The prompt for this year's showcase is "What I love about being a military child." Submissions due March 1 through March 31.
VDOT Resources The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for building, maintaining and operating roads, bridges and tunnels across Virginia. Different jobs at VDOT require a combination of science, art, technology, language arts, mathematics, and history. Examples of these community helpers include scientists, archaeologists, photographers, computer engineers, and safety service patrollers. Resources are available from VDOT for students in the early grades with safety signs through secondary STEM outreach opportunities.

Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Teacher Institute This free institute is for upper elementary and middle school teachers from July 12 – 15 at Jamestown Settlement, Williamsburg. The focus will be on 17th century Virginia history and cultures that converged at Jamestown. Participants will explore primary sources and collaborate with fellow teachers to develop lessons and performance tasks to use in the classroom. Earn professional development credits. Learning Reset On-Line Conference The past year has changed the way we teach. Teachers and schools have adopted innovative strategies for connecting with students and delivering instruction, and some of those strategies are worth keeping even when in-person learning is the norm. Nominations for Career Success Stars in CTE-Nominations Due April 16 The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education is seeking nominations of former CTE students in their 20s and 30s who qualify for recognition as one of the Commonwealth’s brightest Career Success Stars. The individual success stories will be featured as video profiles on the VDOE website highlighting how CTE programs provide skills for career success. Individuals will be selected to represent each of the 17 career clusters and 83 related pathways. There will also be a featured story representing an active military personnel. Selection considerations will include diverse representation by gender, race/ethnicity, and statewide regional locations. School divisions’ CTE administrators will be provided this information and the nomination link to distribute to their schools. See Superintendent’s Memo 034-21 for additional details.
