Did You Know? 
Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month! 
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Governor Northam shared a video message and the Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month Proclamation which can be found in both English and Spanish.

Secondary: Social & Emotional Learning and Reading Webinar
Participants will learn how to create emotionally and physically safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments that promote all students’ social and emotional development. Specific strategies and considerations will be shared for how English teachers can enhance instructional practices to embed SEL into their curriculum and lesson plans. This webinar will be held September 24 at  3 p.m.

VDOE Mathematics Addressing Unfinished Learning Webinars
 These session will focus on how teachers can use formative assessment to address unfinished learning and target instruction.Mathematics leaders and educators are encouraged to participate.

Assessment Supports for 2020-2021 Webinar
VDOE English Instruction Office will collaborate with the Office of Student Assessment to provide supports and best practices for English instruction leading up to end of year assessments. This webinar will be held October 1 at  3 p.m.

VDOE Mathematics Implementing Rich Mathematics Tasks Webinars These session will focus on strategies for synchronous online implementation of mathematics tasks. Mathematics leaders and educators are encouraged to participate.

New Micro-offerings from WIDA Professional Learning  
The 30-45 minute courses are free and designed for educators who work with multilingual children and youth across a variety of settings. The following micro-offerings are now available in the Supporting Multilingual Learners during COVID-19 series: Distance Learning with Multilingual Learners in Mind, Tending to Multilingual Learners’ Social-Emotional Well-Being, and Consideration for Evaluating Online Resources for Multilingual Learners.  Access all three courses on the Distance Teaching and Learning webpage.

Road Maps: Around the World Adventure
This is a web-based digital journey that allows students in grades 5-12 to explore new places, languages, cultures, and histories. As they travel virtually around the world, students complete “exploration” and “excursion” tasks that will help them learn more about the places they visit. Teachers can use the tool in a traditional in-person setting or in a virtual learning environment. This journey is suitable for students in grades 5–12, or anyone interested in learning more about the world around them.

Virginia Academy of Science BioBlitz 2020   
This project is open to K-12 teachers, their students, and families. A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying many species over a short period of time. Members work together to get a snapshot of an area’s biodiversity. Register for this online event on September 26 at 9 a.m.

FLAVA 2020 Fall Conference
Registration is now open for the FLAVA Fall virtual conference. The theme for the conference is Beyond Languages and will take place on October 9-10.  Registration fee includes FLAVA membership for the coming year.    

ASL Storytelling Article
This article shares resources from the Gallaudet University’s Motion Light Lab and other sources that use ASL. Read how storytelling apps and other tools that use American Sign Language can support literacy among students who are deaf and remotely learning.

Medicaid and Schools Virtual Training Sessions
VDOE will offer its annual Medicaid and School Training via online training sessions. A complete list of sessions may be found in the Medicaid and Schools 2020 Annual Training Agenda, which includes registration links for each session. This learning opportunity is designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language therapists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, special education aides, and clinic aides. Special education directors, nurse coordinators, financial officers, and Medicaid coordinators will also receive information on how to manage the billing program. 

Fall Forestry and Wildlife Field Tours
Virginia Forest Landowners Education program is having tours in the counties of King William, Halifax, Clarke, Grayson and Carroll this year. Free Digital Media Content Collections from eMediaVA
The eMediaVA team has created over 100 free digital media collections in core contents to keep everyone learning this year. These collections are organized by SOL strand to integrate digital media in a virtual or hybrid classroom. eMediaVA collections include videos, images, interactives, labs, and games to engage learners of all ages.
