VDOE and VCCS Recognize Exemplary
Career and Technical Education Programs
RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Community College System are honoring 18 exemplary career and technical education (CTE) programs and partnerships through the agencies’ annual Creating Excellence Awards program.
The Creating Excellence Awards program promotes best practices in career and technical education by recognizing exemplary contributions of individuals and organizations that improve the quality of career and technical education by:
- Raising academic achievement and technical skills attainment;
- Strengthening connections between secondary and postsecondary education;
- Preparing students for successful transitions to postsecondary education and training and careers; and
- Creating partnerships with businesses, industries and other stakeholders that support relevant CTE programs, and enhance Virginia’s workforce and economy.
The VDOE Secondary CTE awards are in three categories, as follows:
- Advisory Committee Awards
- State and Region 4 — Frederick County Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee, Frederick County Public Schools
- Region 1 — Cisco IT Advisory Committee, Chesterfield County Public Schools
- Region 2 — The Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee, Portsmouth Public Schools
- Business and Industry Partnership Awards
- State and Region 2 — BayPort Credit Union, nominated by Newport News Public Schools
- Region 1 — Hanover Workforce Committee Chamber RVA, nominated by Hanover County Public Schools
- Region 4— American Woodmark Corporation, nominated by Frederick County Public Schools
- Region 5 — BWX, nominated by Campbell County Public Schools
- Region 6— Carilion Clinic, nominated by Roanoke County Public Schools
- Region 7 — Pulaski County Department of Economic Development, nominated by Pulaski County Public Schools
- Region 8 — Microsoft, nominated by Mecklenburg County Public Schools
- Program Awards
- State and Region 4 — Frederick County Public Schools’ Work-Based Learning Program
- Region 1 — New Kent County Public Schools’ Bridging Communities Culinary Arts
- Region 2 — Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ Advanced Entrepreneurship and Innovation Company Project
- Region 3 — Spotsylvania County Public Schools’ Cougar Zone School Based Enterprise
- Region 5 — Campbell County Public Schools’ Brookville High School’s Horticulture Program
- Region 6 — Alleghany County Public Schools’ “Something to Cluck About” Program
- Region 7 — Tazewell County Public Schools’ Masonry Program
The VCCS Postsecondary CTE State Award is in the program category, as follows:
- Program Award — Information Technology Program, nominated by New River Community College
“I congratulate all of the winners and nominees for their efforts to prepare students for ‘what comes next’ through career and technical education programs that are rigorous, relevant and aligned with the workforce needs of their communities and the commonwealth,” Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane said.
