*Guidelines for Public Comment
The Board of Education will provide an opportunity for members of the public to address the Board at its meetings, as appropriate, during the public comment portion of the meeting.
At its regular meetings, members of the public may address the Board during the public comment portion of the meeting on any matter related to public education which includes the actions of the board. During the public comment portion of any committee of the board or any advisory committee of the Board, the board requests that members of the public only address the committee on matters on the committee’s published agenda and any matters added to the agenda during the meeting by the committee.
Requests to address the board or one of its committees during the public comment portion of the meeting shall include the subject to be discussed and the name of the speaker.
Requests to address the Board or one of its committees during the public comment portion of the meeting should be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education (804)225-2540 or Sonya.Broady@doe.virginia.gov) in advance of the meeting, but may be submitted the day of the meeting, at the discretion of the president or committee chairperson. In honoring such requests, the Board will limit such comments to three minutes for each speaker at the discretion of the president or committee chairperson.
The Board president or committee chairperson may, in his or her discretion, extend the public comment portion of the meeting, allocate the time available for public comment, adjust the order of speakers, or take other reasonable measures to ensure that the Board hears multiple views on any matter presented to the Board.
Public comment speakers will be encouraged to provide multiple written copies (11) of their comments or other materials amplifying their views.
**New Security Protocols for James Monroe Building
The Governor’s Office has announced new security protocols for state office buildings, including the James Monroe Building. These security protocols were implemented on October 1, 2019. The Board of Education and the Department of Education are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all employees and visitors.
Beginning October 1, 2019, all visitors to Board of Education meetings and the Department of Education must sign in at the security desk on the first floor (across from the Virginia Credit Union). Picture ID’s are required. Visitors from other state agencies outside the James Monroe Building must also sign-in. When you arrive on-site, please sign-in at the security desk and let them know you are attending the Board of Education meeting. Security will call the appropriate contact to escort non-state employee visitors to the 22nd floor for the Board meeting. All visitors, including state employees from other agencies, must return to the security desk to sign-out.
Please understand there will be some challenges as the agency adjusts to these new protocols. Members of the public attending a meeting at VDOE who do not have a state-issued employee ID badge should plan to arrive 20 minutes prior to the meeting and expect delays at the security desk. A VDOE staff member or security will escort guests 15 minutes prior to the meeting. Anyone who arrives after the start of the meeting will need to remain at the security desk until a VDOE staff member or security is available escort guests to the meeting. Security desk hours are from 8:00AM to 5:00PM
If you have questions, please contact Sonya Broady at 804-225-2540 or sonya.broady@doe.virginia.gov. We appreciate your patience and commitment to ensuring the safety of all employees and guests to our building.
