Capital City Symposium-April 18 Join the Virginia Teacher of the Year Network and VASCD for this one-day professional development opportunity held at Thomas Dale High School. The sessions are for teachers by teachers and include practical ideas to use in classrooms! Conversations with mentor teachers will occur throughout the event. Recertification points are awarded for full day attendance. Register by April 1.

2020 Virginia Council for Learning Disabilities Symposium-April 25 On April 25, VCLD will host their annual symposium entitled Implementing High-Leverage Practices in the Classroom at Old Dominion University. The Symposium is geared toward general and special educators, and prospective educators who are interested in effective ways to teach students with disabilities.
Spotlight on Literacy: History and Reading TeachingHistory.org offers guidance for teachers incorporating literacy strategies into their history classrooms. This resource provides best practices surrounding adapting primary source documents for classroom use and provides examples for the elementary, middle, and high school classrooms.
Underage Drinking Resources for Parents VAHPERD has created an Underage Drinking Resources for Parents and other Caring Adults. Schools can share this valuable resources with parents to have access to numerous resources for starting conversations that prevent underage drinking.
Fellowship Opportunity VA War Memorial is pleased to announce the inaugural VA World War II Heritage Alliance Teacher Fellowship. This is a free three-session, application-based program that has teachers travel across the state to different WWII sites. All Virginia educators with an interest in history are welcome to apply.
Black History Month Resources As our nation observes Black History Month, VDOE is pleased to provide school divisions with Black History Month resources that honor African Americans and celebrate their achievements and contributions to America. Local school divisions are encouraged to seek and develop instructional and community programming that highlights Black history not only during February, but also throughout the entire year. 25th Annual Richmond Technology Awards The rvatech Council is taking nominations for its annual Gala and Awards Ceremony. The awards recognize individual and team accomplishments, community impact, innovation excellence, and growing small businesses. Nominations are now open.
Virginia Declaration of Learning Program This program is exclusively for educators in Virginia who work in 4-12th grade art, social studies, language arts, gifted & talented, special education, ELL, and media specialists. Participants will gain access to resources from George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Reception Rooms, the American Civil War Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. Applications are due February 23.
Nominations for the 2020 Standards of Learning Item and Test Review Committees-Due March 6 The Office of Student Assessment is seeking nominations for the 2020 Standards of Learning Item and Test Review Committees. Approximately 15 members are needed for each of the committees and school divisions may nominate one or more representatives for each committee. The committee meetings will be held this summer in Richmond. All individuals who wish to serve on these committees, including those who have previously served, must submit an online application found on the SOL Assessment Committee web page. The application requires a professional reference and division approval. See Superintendent’s Memo 016-20 for dates and additional information.
Virginia War Memorial Institutes Virginia War Memorial is offering day-long summer teacher institutes. These Institutes are free to all participants and cover topics ranging from Teaching with Film and Voices of the Vietnam War to The Army and the Global War on Terrorism. Institute participants will receive recertification points, a boxed lunch, and classroom resources.
