Did You Know?
Coming in January 2020: #GoOpenVA
Coming in January 2020, VDOE will launch our first open education resource (OER) repository and sharing community. #GoOpenVA is a collaboration between Virginia educators, educational entities, and other stakeholders promoting the curation, creation, and sharing of quality digital instructional materials that can be used by all educators to support deeper learning. VDOE is working with school divisions to ensure access through your single-sign-on mechanism. Webinar: SSWS for World Language Academies Data Entry
VDOE will be holding a webinar to assist with using the SSWS process for recording student data. The webinar will include a demonstration of the technology and the opportunity to ask questions about the nomination process. Private school representatives are invited to participate as well. The webinar will take place on November 14 at 10:00 a.m. Register online to participate in the webinar through Zoom.

Strong Men and Women in Virginia History Student Writing Contest
High school students are invited to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in Dominion Energy and the Library of Virginia’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History student writing contest. Students may submit their 400-word essay by midnight, November 22, for a chance to win an Apple MacBook Air and $1,000 for their school!

Nominations: Presidential Cybersecurity Education Award-Due Jan 31
Beginning in the spring of 2020, the Presidential Cybersecurity Education Award will be presented each year to two educators, one elementary and one secondary, who instill in their students the skills, knowledge and passion for cybersecurity and related subjects. Details are available from the U.S. Department of Ed. Bullying Prevention!
Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help children prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy. Learn more about what bullying is and how to prevent with bullying prevention resources.

Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library Visit
Did you know that the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton offers programs on Virginia Archaeology, Wilson’s Virginia, WWI, Women's Rights, and more? You can visit the museum in person, have museum educators come to your class, or do a virtual visit. Additionally, thanks to a generous grant by the Charles Fund, student admission tickets can be provided for no charge as well as up to $100 in bus transportation costs. VAEA Fall Conference
The Virginia Art Education Association is hosting their Fall Professional Development Conference November 7-9. The Conference is located at Hotel Madison in Harrisonburg. Find out more from VAEA.

New African American Education Resources
New African American Education Resources are now available from the Library of Virginia. To view these resources along with a comprehensive list of all the education resources, visit the Library of Virginia.

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange
The CBYX scholarship program is a full scholarship exchange program that offers 250 young Americans the opportunity to live with a host family and attend high school in Germany for an academic year. Previous German language experience is not required. Academic merit, as well as motivation, curiosity and flexibility are key components to a competitive application. Students between the ages of 15 and 18.5 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply. The application deadline is December 3.

Civics Summit-November 15
The Commission on Civic Education is hosting a one-day Civics Summit for division personnel and teachers who work with students in Civics and Economics and Virginia and United States Government. VMEA Fall Conference
The Virginia Music Educators Association is hosting their Fall Professional Development Conference November 21-23. The Conference is located at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs. Find out more on the VMEA website.

Culturally Relevant Course
The purpose of this course module is to provide foundational knowledge related to culturally relevant education, including common terms, examples in selected content areas, and information about managing the classroom and individual behaviors. Virginia 529 and VCEE Reading Makes Cents
In partnership with the Virginia Council on Economic Education, Virginia529 is sponsoring Reading Makes Cents to introduce basic financial concepts. This program is available to K-5 students and librarians across Virginia. The program teaches a multitude of financial literacy and SOL concepts through a selection of books, lesson plans, and activities. Check it out today!

GWLA Nominations
The nomination period for the Governor's World Language Academies is now open.  Applications (except for online testing) must be completed and postmarked by January 27, 2020.  Information, applications, and resources are available on the Academies website.
