VAHPERD’s 2019-2020 Choose Your Vibe – Arrive Alive! October 30, 2019 is the deadline for high school juniors and seniors to apply to be a social media ambassador for Virginia’s health and physical educators' 2019-2020 Choose Your Vibe - Arrive Alive! campaign. Ambassadors can earn up to $600 by using their social media accounts to share their safe driving and alcohol-free choices. Resources for the New History and Social Science Tests Assessing the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning As stated in Superintendent’s Memo 092-19, dated April 19, 2019, implementation of the new history and social science tests based on the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning will begin with the spring 2020 administration for the following SOL tests: Virginia Studies, Civics and Economics, and Virginia and U.S. History. Superintendent’s Memo 238-19 provides additional details and introduces resources for the new history and social science tests including: Test Blueprints, SOL Practice Items, and Audio Practice Items.
Virginia 529 and VCEE Reading Makes Cents In partnership with the Virginia Council on Economic Education, Virginia529 is sponsoring Reading Makes Cents to introduce basic financial concepts. This program is available to K-5 students and librarians across Virginia. The program teaches a multitude of financial literacy and SOL concepts through a selection of books, lesson plans, and activities. Check it out today!

Resources for the New Reading Tests Assessing the 2017 English SOL As stated in Superintendent’s Memorandum 260-18, dated September 14, 2018, implementation of the new reading tests based on the 2017 English Standards of Learning will begin with the spring 2020 administration for the End-of-Course reading test and grades 3 through 8 reading tests. Superintendent’s Memo 237-19 introduces resources for the new reading tests including: Test Blueprints, Audio Practice Items, and SOL Practice Items. Practice items must be accessed via the installable TestNav 8 application. See the TestNav 8 Technical Assistance Document (PDF) for information on the system requirements to access TestNav 8, along with instructions for downloading the TestNav 8 application.
Health Smart Virginia Visit the new Health Smart Virginia YouTube channel that includes video resources to supplement lessons and activities. In addition to educational video resources for instruction, the channel has videos with information about the link between health and academics and how best to use and navigate the Health Smart VA website.

Donna Sterling Institute: The Power of Problem-Based Learning for Teaching STEM Frank Niepold, who serves as the Teaching Climate Lead for NOAA’s Climate.gov, will speak on climate resiliency. Using a current science topic, climate science, the leaders will demonstrate how to develop a problem-based learning unit that is adaptable for elementary through high school. Elevating Virginia’s Gap Group Achievement in Mathematics October 24, Roanoke. This interactive, hands-on day of professional learning will provide teachers, administrators and teams a toolkit of new formative assessment and learning resources to close achievement gaps in math while elevating the performance of each student. Participants will be provided guided time to collaboratively create personalized assessment/learning structures, so bring a relevant 2016 math framework, and (if possible) a current division math pacing guide.

Planning and Implementing a Strategic Plan to Address SEL in Your School Division November 6, Hampton and co-sponsored by VASS and Rethink ED. This important program will support Virginia school superintendents and their teams in addressing, adopting and advocating student social and emotional wellness. Attendees will be prepared to: adopt practical skills from the leading voices in social and emotional learning; promote wellness for students, educators and the entire community; implement changes that foster a more positive, system-wide school climate; and address social-emotional barriers to increase student learning.
2020 Governor’s Summer Residential Program The 2020 Governor’s Summer Residential Program will include seven Summer Residential Governor’s Schools (SRGS) and five Governor’s World Language Academies (GWLA). The SRGS offer gifted high school students opportunities for intensive study in academics, mentorships, and visual and performing arts. The GWLA offer full-immersion academies for French, German, and Spanish; a partial-immersion academy for Japanese; and a Latin Academy. The availability of these programs is contingent upon the provision of state funds by the 2020 General Assembly. See Superintendent’s Memo 239-19 for details and application information.
Coming in January 2020: #GoOpenVA Are you tired of searching for hours trying to find resources for your classroom or finding resources only to be disappointed with quality or alignment? Well we have some good news! Coming in January 2020, VDOE will launch our first open education resource (OER) repository and sharing community. This platform, #GoOpenVA, is a collaboration between Virginia educators, educational entities, and other stakeholders promoting the curation, creation, and sharing of quality digital instructional materials that can be used by all educators and learners to support deeper learning. We are working with your school division to ensure you can access it through your single-sign-on mechanism, making it easy for you to access thousands of instructional resources. VDOE will be launching professional learning opportunities. Stay tuned to VDOE and TeacherDirect for more information on the #GoOpenVA initiative.
