Congratulations! Seven Virginia public schools are among the 362 schools named as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The National Blue Ribbon Schools are selected based on one of two criteria: performance on state assessments, or in the case of private schools, performance on national standardized tests and high school graduation rates; or performance in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years while increasing graduation rates for each subgroup. Multisensory Structured Literacy Training Applications- due October 22 General education teachers, special education teachers, and reading specialists in grades K-6 may apply to attend this 30 hour training in the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching foundational reading skills in reading, spelling and writing. Apply today!

2020 Governor’s Summer Residential Program
The 2020 Governor’s Summer Residential Program will include seven Summer Residential Governor’s Schools (SRGS) and five Governor’s World Language Academies (GWLA). The SRGS offer gifted high school students opportunities for intensive study in academics, mentorships, and visual and performing arts. The GWLA offer full-immersion academies for French, German, and Spanish; a partial-immersion academy for Japanese; and a Latin Academy. The availability of these programs is contingent upon the provision of state funds by the 2020 General Assembly. See Superintendent’s Memo 239-19 for details and application information.

Virginia EL Supervisors’ Association 2020 Annual Conference
The VESA 2020 Annual Conference theme is Equity for Diverse Learners and will be held on January 30-31. The conference will feature sessions related to best practices in working with English Learners. Topics will include removing barriers to equity and ensuring that ELs have full and equal access to the same curriculum and opportunities as all students. Register by January 10!

Resources for the New Reading Tests Assessing the 2017 English SOL
As stated in Superintendent’s Memorandum 260-18, dated September 14, 2018, implementation of the new reading tests based on the 2017 English Standards of Learning will begin with the spring 2020 administration for the End-of-Course reading test and grades 3 through 8 reading tests. Superintendent’s Memo 237-19 introduces resources for the new reading tests including: Test Blueprints, Audio Practice Items, and SOL Practice Items. Practice items must be accessed via the installable TestNav 8 application. See the TestNav 8 Technical Assistance Document (PDF) for information on the system requirements to access TestNav 8, along with instructions for downloading the TestNav 8 application

Resources for the New History and Social Science Tests Assessing the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning
As stated in Superintendent’s Memo 092-19, dated April 19, 2019, implementation of the new history and social science tests based on the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning will begin with the spring 2020 administration for the following SOL tests: Virginia Studies, Civics and Economics, and Virginia and U.S. History. Superintendent’s Memo 238-19  provides additional details and introduces resources for the new history and social science tests including: Test Blueprints, SOL Practice Items, and Audio Practice Items.

The Battelle NEON STEM Grant-Due October 31
This grant opportunity aims to challenge educators across the United States to pilot the development or expansion of sustainable, scalable, K-12 STEM education programming that specifically utilizes NEON data and/or resources. Find out more information today!

Success in Secondary Math: Connecting Language and Content
This PD is intended for Math content teachers, grades 6-12, who have English learners in their classes. The one-day training will include activities that model and engage participants in research-based, interactive instructional strategies for enhancing grade-level standards-based instruction for ELs. Participants will explore topics related to supporting structured academic discourse connected to SOL, promoting student autonomy and motivation, and creating authentic tasks for meaning-making and productive struggle. Virginia Farm to School Week 
Virginia Farm to School Week is scheduled for October 7-11, to coincide with National Farm to School Month and recognize the importance of Farm to School in improving child nutrition, supporting local economies, and educating students about the origins of food. On October 9, 2019 at 10 a.m. make some noise by participating in the third annual Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth, an event where all participants simultaneously take a bite out of a locally-grown apple.
