Did You Know?
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. All month, mental health advocates, prevention organizations, survivors, allies, and community members unite to promote suicide prevention awareness throughout the nation. Virginia educators are asked to explore the Suicide Prevention Toolkit, which includes educational materials, and print-ready social media communication templates that schools can use. Nominations for Standard Setting Committees for the Reading SOL Tests Based on the 2017 English Standards of Learning- Due Sept. 27
The Office of Student Assessment is accepting nominations for standard setting committees for the Reading SOL tests. Standard setting is necessary because of the implementation of new reading tests in spring 2020 based on the 2017 English Standards of Learning. The committee meetings will be held December 4-6, 2019 at the Virginia Crossings Hotel and Conference Center. All nominees who wish to serve on the standard setting committees must complete an online application (ACAPS) and will need a professional reference and division-level approval. Completed applications are due to VDOE through ACAPS by September 27.  See Superintendent’s Memo 217-19 for more information.

2019 English Deeper Learning Conference Registration is Now Open!
This Conference will provide professional development that focuses on continued implementation of engaging instruction that aligns to the 2017 English Standards and Curriculum Framework. Elementary sessions include support for grades 3-5 literacy instruction, the development of grade 5 writing local assessments, and planning for instruction of K-3 students with UVA PALS. PALS will hold their annual division representatives meeting at each location. Secondary sessions will focus on pedagogical practices for middle school reading and writing, the development and scoring of local performance assessments to verify credits in writing, and integrating the Standards for a more comprehensive approach to instruction. Register today! Science Deeper Learning Institutes
Deeper Learning: Using the 2018 Science Standards of Learning to Inform Instruction institutes to be held in October/November were announced through a superintendent's email on August 28.  The Institute will provide teachers and science leaders with PD focused on effective science instruction using the 2018 Science Standards of Learning to support deeper learning opportunities for students and to strengthen locally-designed curricula.  Each division superintendent or designee will select a division-level contact who will identify and register up to five team members.  For additional information, email Anne Petersen.

2019 History and Social Science Deeper Learning Conference Registration is Now Open!
Register today! This professional development will focus on engaging instruction that aligns to the 2015 HSS Standards and Curriculum Framework. Elementary sessions include support for literacy instruction and the development of performance tasks and assessments. Secondary sessions will focus on pedagogical practices for the use of information sources, reading and writing, the development performance tasks and assessments, and ways to integrate the Standards for a more comprehensive approach to instruction.  Questions about registration, email Nancy Rakes. 2019 Mathematics Institutes
The K-12 Developing Deeper Learning through Rich Mathematical Tasks -2019 Mathematics Institutes to be held in October/November were announced through a superintendent's email on August 26. The Institute will provide teachers and mathematics leaders with PD focused on effective mathematics instruction with particular emphasis on the implementation of rich mathematical tasks to support deeper learning opportunities for students and to strengthen locally-designed curricula. Each division superintendent or designee will select a division-level contact who will identify and register up to eight team members. For additional information, email mathematics@doe.virginia.gov.

September 15 – October 15 is Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month!
The observance celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Read the Governor's proclamation. Visit the Virginia Hispanic Chamber, Hispanic Heritage Month, National Education Association, Library of Congress, National Archives, National Park Service, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian, and the National Endowment for the Humanities for resources and ideas on how to celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month!

Crab Trap App
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science in partnership with the Office of the Secretary of Education and the Office of the Secretary of Natural Resources is seeking innovative high school students to develop a mobile app specific to blue crab trap removal. Students can develop their own or modify an existing open source app to create the “Crab Trap App”, that will be used to track and record lost traps recovered from the Chesapeake Bay. The deadline for submitting the App is October 28. 

Virginia War Memorial Veterans Day Essay Concert
This year’s prompt asks students to write about a Virginian in the military from the 20th or 21st century who inspires you. Students are encouraged to think of members of their families and communities in addition to historical figures when considering the subject. The contest is open to all Virginia middle and high school students and a winner will be chosen from each age category. Winners and their teachers receive a prize and will be given the opportunity to attend the Commonwealth’s Veterans Day Ceremony to read their winning submission aloud. Apply today!

VATOY T.L.C. Symposium-November 9
This one-day professional development opportunity will be held at the New College Institute in Martinsville. Conference sessions are led by award winning teachers from across the Commonwealth. Conversations with mentor teachers will occur throughout the event, providing a small-group setting for questions and discussion. Future dates include Norfolk-February 15 and Chesterfield-April 18. The registration deadline is October 25.

Virginia Department of Aviation Opportunities
Use aviation to show your students real life applications to classroom knowledge! The Virginia Department of Aviation has programs available to both teachers and students that can help students succeed. Packages were mailed out to schools containing information on four of the many scholarships offered in Virginia as well as information on how to earn a grant to teach. Check with your school or DOAV for more information.  

VASCD Professional Development Opportunities

  • Connecting the Dots Between Creative Expression and Academic Learning:October 10 at Marriott at City Center Newport News.  Join author Ron Beghetto to learn how big changes can result from slight adjustments to your existing practice. VASCD Members use discount code MEMBER2019 to receive a discount.
  • School Innovation Forums.  Most Innovation Forums include opportunities to talk with school staff and/or students, visit classrooms, and discuss their own schools’ change efforts with participants and hosts. Dates include: October 15 in Greene County. November 13 in Goochland County.

Putting Social Studies in its Place: Using GIS to Enhance the Classroom 
This is a free online PD for teachers, grades 4-12, that will provide tools to effectively use GIS in their instruction. Participants will receive recertification points, free supplemental classroom resources, and access to an online professional learning community. Register today!
