2019 English Deeper Learning Conference Registration is Now Open!
This Conference will provide professional development that focuses on continued implementation of engaging instruction that aligns to the 2017 English Standards and Curriculum Framework. Elementary sessions include support for grades 3-5 literacy instruction, the development of grade 5 writing local assessments, and planning for instruction of K-3 students with UVA PALS. PALS will hold their annual division representatives meeting at each location. Secondary sessions will focus on pedagogical practices for middle school reading and writing, the development and scoring of local performance assessments to verify credits in writing, and integrating the Standards for a more comprehensive approach to instruction. Advancing Computer Science Education Grant Request for Proposals
VDOE is offering grants for school divisions to promote the advancement of computer science education and workforce development. This is an opportunity for school divisions, alongside partner organizations, to explore innovative approaches to expand computer science opportunities inclusive to all students.
VDOE Understand Scoring Update
To support school divisions in implementing local high school performance assessments to verify credits in writing, the Understand Scoring application has a new section with anchor papers and practice sets written by Virginia students in response to performance tasks. Educators will be able to review the anchor papers with annotations, the rubric for scoring local performance assessments, and then practice scoring student papers. For teachers who need to create an account, select the “Sign Up” button on the Understand Scoring home page and use the keyword “Virginia” when prompted. By using the "Guest User" function, this program may be used with students to facilitate student understanding of the expectations in each of the domains.
Virginia Museum of History and Culture Online Course
This free online course, Primarily Virginia, is designed for teachers to explore Virginia's past by examining objects and primary sources. Upon completion of the course, participating teachers will be eligible for recertification points and will receive a VMHC membership. Please register by September 16.
Write to Learn Fall Conference
The Shenandoah Valley Writing Project will be holding their annual Write to Learn Conference on September 14. on the Shenandoah University campus in Winchester. This year’s keynote workshop will be held by A.J. Juliani, an educator who focuses on inquiry and project based learning. The annual conference is open to all teachers in every content, K-University.
