Mandatory Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Training
All state employees must complete an online learning module called “The Road to Cultural Competence,” by December 31, 2021. New state employees must complete the training within the first 90 days of their employment. The Department of Human Resource Management and its Office of Workforce Engagement created the training in response to legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2020. DMAS is tracking participation in this training module to ensure that our agency complies with this requirement.
|
You can find the training in the Virginia Learning Center (VLC). If you need assistance with your VLC account, please contact Talent Development at AskHCDTalentDev@dmas.virginia.gov.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and support survivors of domestic violence. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence first observed a national Day of Unity in October 1981. Domestic violence includes physical and/or sexual violence, threats, as well as economic and emotional/psychological abuse.
|
Domestic violence can happen to anyone, and it is present in every community, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, socioeconomic status, religion or nationality. In the United States, over 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually, and more than 2,000 people were killed by domestic violence-related shootings in 2020, a 4% increase over 2019.
Domestic violence data is difficult to track because an estimated 40% of incidents are not reported. Some signs of abuse include extreme jealousy or demeaning speech, isolation from family and friends, controlling finances, and intimidation. Signs that someone else may be the victim of domestic violence may include excuses for or clothes covering injuries, personality changes like reduced self-esteem, constantly checking in with or concerned with pleasing a partner and skipping work or events without a reason.
The National Domestic Hotline has advocates available 24/7 at 1-800-787-3244.

Fall harvest salad
This salad’s sweet-earthy flavors pair deliciously with roast pork or chicken. You can buy and prep a whole squash - start with one that's 2 pounds. Or purchase precut butternut squash at your supermarket.
It's a great shortcut for time-pressed cooks. Be sure to trim down the pieces to small, even-size cubes or slices before roasting to allow for even browning. If you dice the pear ahead of time, toss it with lemon juice to avoid browning.
|
This also makes for a hearty main dish salad, ready in under an hour, richly flavored and satisfyingly seasonal, not to mention pretty on the plate. The walnuts and arugula give the salad a slightly bitter punch, one that marries perfectly with the sweetness of the pear and roasted squash.

Improving our health should be one of the top priorities in life, and it's important to plan ahead so other "to-do" items don't push fitness off your radar. To keep exercise a priority, try some of these strategies, and you can commit to Get Fit!
Put it on the calendar. Schedule physical activity as you would any other appointment during the day. Don't change your exercise plans for every interruption that comes along. Find a good time of the day that works with your schedule, and stick with it.
Become part of a team or join a fitness club. Sign up for a softball, soccer or volleyball team through your local parks and recreation department. Making a commitment to a team is a great motivator. You could also sign up for a group exercise class at a nearby fitness club. The cost may be an added incentive to stick with it.
Wear an activity tracker or pedometer. Set a goal for daily activity, and then track your results. You may be motivated to do even more, and it’s also very encouraging to see how short walks or small amounts of activity can really add up over the course of a day.
Revisit CommonHealth's Move It Virginia campaign, and find tools to help you get active!
