Thanksgiving Milestone

122,000 Virginians now enrolled in health coverage

Virginia celebrated Thanksgiving by achieving a major milestone, topping 100,000 newly enrolled members under the new eligibility rules for Medicaid expansion.

Medicaid cards will be mailed to these new members on December 19, and letters assigning them to a health plan will be mailed on December 26. Individuals have 90 days from January 1 to decide whether to keep the plan they were automatically enrolled in, or to select a plan of their choice.

Starting on January 1, 2019, these individuals will be able to receive services that include doctor visits, hospital stays and prescription drugs.

Virginia's Top Doc

Governor Ralph Northam, Medicaid Expansion Provider Presentation

Governor Ralph Northam was the guest of honor at the grand finale in an 11-part series of provider outreach events across the Commonwealth this fall. Check out this video from his remarks in which he discusses the importance of Medicaid expansion from his perspective as a pediatric neurologist and as the 73rd Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The event was hosted by Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Henrico County. More than 500 health care providers attended one of the outreach events. They were given brochures and provider toolkits to help them talk with their patients about the new Medicaid eligibility rules.

Providers also were encouraged to begin accepting Medicaid members or to take more members. Representatives from Virginia Medicaid’s six health plans attended to answer questions about credentialing and contracting.

The full video of the provider event at St. Mary’s will be available for viewing soon on the DMAS website’s Medicaid expansion provider page.

Hop on the Bus!

Richmond Bus Ad, Virginia Medicaid

The next time you take the bus to work, look for new advertisements educating Richmond adults about Virginia Medicaid’s new eligibility rules. The ads are supported by a collaborative group of local funders. English interior ads will run for three months from mid-November through mid-February, and Spanish interior ads will run for two months through mid-January. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is also helping to get the word out through videos that are being shown at pharmacy kiosks around Virginia. You can watch the video on our website. These initiatives are helping to supplement DMAS’ advertising campaign currently underway. The campaign includes radio spots, digital ads, billboards, newspaper ads, and gas station fuel tank toppers.
