The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) hazard mitigation grants team is hosting an informational webinar regarding open Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grants and how to apply. Grant opportunities discussed will include the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding following Hurricane Helene (FEMA-DR-4831-VA), Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA), Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC), and the Emergency Shelter Upgrade Assistance Grant Fund. VDEM is currently accepting applications for all of these opportunities.
Below is a brief synopsis of each grant opportunity that will be discussed during the webinar. For detailed information, please join our webinar or follow the hyperlink for each program.
-
Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP): This FEMA grant opportunity provides funding for eligible applicants following a presidential major disaster declaration. The purpose of this program is to rebuild from disasters in a way that reduces, or mitigates, future disaster losses. Funding for this program is part of the recovery effort for Hurricane Helene (FEMA-DR-4831-VA).
-
Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA): This FEMA grant opportunity provides funding for projects for projects reducing or eliminating the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Project types can include cost-effective capability and capacity building activities, localized flood risk reduction projects, individual flood mitigation projects, technical assistance to communities, project scoping, and mitigation plans.
-
Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC): This FEMA grant opportunity provides funding cost-effective capability-and capacity-building projects that “enhance the knowledge, skills, and expertise of the current workforce to expand or improve the administration of mitigation assistance.” Sub-categories include projects designed around building codes, partnerships, project scoping, and hazard mitigation planning. Through BRIC, FEMA continues to invest in a variety of mitigation activities with an added focus on infrastructure projects benefitting disadvantaged communities, nature-based solutions, climate resilience and adaption and adopting hazard resistant building codes.
-
Shelter Upgrade Assistance Grant Fund: This opportunity is funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia State Code § 44-146.29:3. The intent of this program is to provide matching funds to localities to install, maintain, or repair permanent infrastructure related to standby backup energy generation for emergency shelters, and to improve the hazard-specific structural integrity (wind retrofit) of shelter facilities owned by the locality.
