 Chesterfield Moving Toward Construction on Both Ends of Powhite Parkway Extension
 During the Aug. 26 Board of Supervisors meeting, Transportation Director Chessa Walker noted that her department plans to advertise a construction contract for Phase I of the Powhite Parkway Extension in September. Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year or early 2027 on a fully funded $150 million project to extend the four-lane roadway from its current terminus to Woolridge Road.
Chesterfield Economic Development also has secured $45 million in state and federal funding to begin construction later this year on the Western Area Arterial Collector from Route 360 to the county’s Upper Magnolia Green West technology village site. That two-lane roadway will eventually extend to Westerleigh Parkway and become the southernmost segment of the Powhite Extension.
“This is monumental in terms of getting our transportation network in this area built out,” Walker said in her presentation to the board, a recording of which can be viewed on the county’s YouTube channel. “We’re making good progress from the north and from the south.”

Play Chesterfield, a division of Chesterfield County’s Sports, Visitation & Entertainment Department, is now accepting nominations for the Class of 2027 Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame, presented by SINA Experiences. Established in 2024, the Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches, teams and sports contributors whose achievements, service and lasting contributions have helped shape Chesterfield’s rich sports history.
Nominations are accepted year-round; however, nominations must be submitted by Nov. 15, 2026, to be considered for the Class of 2027.
The Class of 2027 will be honored in spring 2027 during the annual Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame celebration, with the event date and location to be announced later this year. The event will bring together Chesterfield’s sports past, present and future as the newest Hall of Fame class is inducted and the second annual Play Chesterfield Scholar Athlete of the Year program is celebrated.

Learn About '1 For Schools' During September Meetings
The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors and School Board will host a series of joint meetings throughout the county this month to discuss the “1 For Schools” 1% sales tax referendum that will be on the Nov. 3 general election ballot. Staff from both the county and CCPS will provide an overview of the referendum and break down the proposed school projects.

Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors Chair and Midlothian District Supervisor Mark Miller will host a community meeting with Chesterfield residents Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Midlothian Middle School, providing attendees the opportunity to ask questions, share input, and hear updates on several county projects.

Falling Creek Ironworks History Day

Join us for tours, artifacts and living history programs demonstrating the evolution of industry at Falling Creek from the earliest ironworks built in 1619 to the forge and foundry built by Archibald Cary and later destroyed by the British in 1781. Experience various historical time periods demonstrating period trades, people, and the military of our colonial to revolutionary eras. Living history interpreters will demonstrate the warfare that destroyed the iron works in 1622 and also when the British Army destroyed Archibald Cary's mill in 1781.
Pocahontas Premieres: The Richmond Symphony
Saturday, Sept. 12, 7-8:30p.m. at Pocahontas State Park Heritage Amphitheater

If you searched the letters “PSA” online, you’d probably find a list of public service announcements.
This isn’t one of them, but it is a story all about public service.
Long before they were pinned with a badge or took an oath to protect and serve, 40 Chesterfield police officers found the same doorway into law enforcement through the county’s Police Service Aide (PSA) program.
Since the first academy in 2020, more than 137 PSAs have been hired. The program has evolved into a strong workforce development tool that prepares future first responders for their careers while strengthening recruitment across the county.

Meet Mary Lou!
Introducing Mary Lou, also known as Merica. She is an 8-month-old German Wirehaired Pointer mix. She came to us a month ago after tragically being hit by a car. She had extensive road rash on her body and soft tissue damage but miraculously escaped any broken bones or life-threatening injuries.
Mary Lou is feeling wonderful now and is a bouncy, goofy girl. She loves giving kisses and doing zoomies in the yard. She was really excited to meet other dogs and just wanted to play! Mary Lou is currently 50 lbs.

Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.

'1 For Schools' Referendum Will Be on Nov. 3 Election Ballot
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Chesterfield County voters will be asked whether the county should be authorized to levy an additional local retail sales tax of up to 1 percentage point.
If voters approve the referendum, the Board of Supervisors could then adopt an ordinance to levy the tax. Revenue from the tax could be used only for qualifying capital projects involving the construction or major renovation of public schools serving Chesterfield County. The tax would expire July 22, 2046.
If the additional sales tax is implemented, the Board has signaled plans to offset it with a reduction of 2 cents in the real estate tax rate and 10 cents in the personal property tax rate.

Farmers Market Open Wednesdays Through Sept. 30
Farmers markets, which support local businesses, are an important resource for communities to provide access to local fresh produce, food, horticultural goods and hygiene products.
The Chesterfield County Farmers Market is open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Sept. 30 at 6701 Mimms Loop. During season, view the county calendar and visit the market's Facebook page for weekly updates and vendor lists.
You can also visit C-Fit Community for weekly updates about food trucks scheduled to be at the farmers market.

 2026 Winner of Angelique Clarke Social Studies Teacher Leader Award
Midlothian High teacher Nicholas Kirkbride was surprised during teacher workweek with the Angelique Clarke Social Studies Teacher Leader Award. Teaching since 2012 at Midlothian High School, he was praised for his genuine care and commitment to students.
The award presentation included school leaders and Kirkbride’s family popping into a professional development session for secondary history teachers. Sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union, the award is given annually in memory of CCPS social studies teacher Angelique Clarke, who exemplified the characteristics of servant leadership as she helped students find success in school and in life.
 Recent Grad Wins STEAM-H Essay Contest
Matoaca High graduate Grace White was one of 10 essay contest winners from across Virginia who were honored by Gov. Abigail Spanberger and First Gentleman Adam Spanberger in August at the Executive Mansion. The 2026 valedictorian for Matoaca High, White now attends Virginia Tech.
The annual essay contest by the Virginia Council on Women provides scholarships to two high school juniors and seniors from five regions of Virginia who plan to pursue careers in STEAM-H (science, technology, engineering, arts, math and healthcare).
“The winners of this essay contest are future scientists, teachers, researchers and inventors who will work throughout the commonwealth to solve problems and transform lives,” the governor said. “Thank you to the Council on Women for the hard work you put into inspiring the next generation of leaders. The young women being celebrated this year — and every Virginian who submitted their work — make me confident that our future is in good hands.”
