Chesterfield Marks Milestone in Construction of New West Ridge High School
County and school leaders gathered Tuesday morning for a topping-out ceremony at Chesterfield’s first new high school in two decades.
The $135 million West Ridge High School is under construction in the western Route 360 corridor. Topping-out marks a significant milestone in the construction process: placing of the building’s final structural beam.
Located at 17500 Duval Road, the school will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including two full-size gymnasiums, a 3,500-seat stadium, specialized arts and career education classrooms, and dedicated special education space. Outdoor athletic facilities will include baseball and softball diamonds, ample parking, and gathering spaces to support school and community events.
With 340,000 square feet of space, the building is designed to accommodate approximately 2,400 students. It will bring relief to nearby Cosby High School and accommodate future student enrollment growth.
West Ridge High is scheduled to open in August 2027.

The culmination of years of intentional thought, planning and hard work became a reality on Thursday when Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation was able to officially open The Park at River City Sportsplex.
The “park within a park” is a first of its kind for Chesterfield, as the 115-acre facility on Genito Road gains a 2,000-square-foot splash pad with various water features as well as a destination playground, a game space for tweens and teens, an accessible climbing structure and multiple walking and exercise trails.
As part of the 2022 bond referendum overwhelmingly approved by county voters, more than $17 million was slated for enhancements at River City Sportsplex to create a new cornerstone for outdoor activities and community gatherings.
Following the addition of four lighted fields in 2024 at the facility, River City Sportsplex is now home to 16 multi-purpose fields for youth tournaments in soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. The next step, then was adding even more value for the community.
When the county bought the privately-owned facility in 2016, there was a great deal of what Luther called “spoils,” or land that had been untouched and was not targeted for sports amenities. That made it possible for all of the funding for this project to go directly towards “fun stuff” rather than things like utilities and road construction which typically are part and parcel to park projects.

Meet Zeppole!
Zeppole has the most gentle heart and submissive personality. He immediately drops to the floor when he sees you with those big, sad eyes. We would love to know what he is thinking or where he came from. Zeppole wants to be by your side at all times, or better yet, in your lap! He is glued to his people. When meeting other dogs, he was a little shy at first and then greeted them in a friendly manner. Toys are the way to his heart. He will immediately go from looking like the dog on the rescue commercials to excited, happy, waggy-tailed dog. It's such a transformation! He is around 2 years old and weighs 52 lbs. Oh, did we mention he gives hugs!
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.
