Chesterfield County and the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia hosted the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25 at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds.
Fallen soldiers from the county were honored for their service and ultimate sacrifice against the backdrop of America’s 250th anniversary. Residents experienced living history exhibits, took pause at the memorial wall, and heard remarks from the keynote speaker, Capt. Vernon Marshall, Jr., who talked about the work and sacrifices of our armed forces from the American Revolution to present day.
Dr. Mark Miller, chair of the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors, also spoke at the ceremony in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Building Exhibition Hall.

Vote by June 1 on Name for Great Blue Heron at The Park at River City Sportsplex

Vote on a name for the Great Blue Heron at The Park at River City Sportsplex!
Our team enjoyed seeing all of the clever names the community came up with for the mama bird. It was difficult narrowing it down to just a couple of options, but we've decided on six options:
- Belle - A nod to the nearby Belle Isle
- Chessa - In reference to Chesterfield and the Chesapeake Bay watershed
- Ginny - Short for Virginia
- Haven - Symbolizing a safe place for kids to play and grow
- Mama Blue - She's a mom and she's blue
- Sharon - It rhymes!
Submit your vote by commenting on the Parks and Recreation Facebook page. The name with the most votes by June 1 will be announced at the park's opening celebration on Thursday, June 11. We can't wait to see what the community decides and hope to see you at the grand opening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Police Department's Marine Patrol Unit Enforces Boating Safety on Lake Chesdin
If you’re out boating on Lake Chesdin this summer, you may encounter officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit.
The 18-person team significantly increased patrols on the 3,100-acre lake beginning about a year ago, with a goal of ensuring safe operation of watercraft during the busy season for boating.
“We’re now out there some weeks Thursday through Sunday, but at least Friday through Sunday every week from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” said Cpl. B.W. Chester with the CCPD Marine Patrol Unit. “There is essentially a constant presence on the lake when most of the recreational boaters are out there.”

Introducing Zeppole!
Zeppole has the most gentle heart and submissive personality. He immediately drops to the floor when he sees you with those big, sad eyes. We would love to know what he is thinking or where he came from. Zeppole wants to be by your side at all times, or better yet, in your lap! He is glued to his people. When meeting other dogs, he was a little shy at first and then greeted them in a friendly manner. Toys are the way to his heart. He will immediately go from looking like the dog on the rescue commercials to excited, happy, waggy-tailed dog. It's such a transformation! He is around 2 years old and weighs 52 lbs. Oh, did we mention he gives hugs!
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.
