Michelle Smith has been selected as Chesterfield’s new director of Juvenile Justice Services.
Smith, who previously served as superintendent of Loudoun County’s Youth Services Center in Leesburg for more than 20 years, has nearly three decades of experience in working in and leading juvenile justice organizations.
Chesterfield Juvenile Justice Services serves, supports, protects and empowers the court-involved youth and juvenile victims of both Chesterfield and Colonial Heights. The department manages a multifaceted network of juvenile-focused programs and facilities, including the Juvenile Detention Home, Adolescent Resource Pathways, Davis Children's Advocacy Center and several community-based programs funded in part through the Virginia Juvenile Community Crime Control Act (VJCCCA).
Smith takes over for Marilyn Brown, who left the county in January when she was named the chief deputy director for the state’s Department of Juvenile Justice.
“Michelle is just the kind of person we want leading this department,” said Dr. James Worsley, deputy county administrator for human services. “She has the kind of experience and the breadth of knowledge that this role requires. We are excited about getting her on board and having her help all of those who are served by this department.”

At Chesterfield's Annual Awards Ceremony, Service Extends Beyond Duty
Picture this: You’re driving to work on a typical fall morning. Maybe you’re running a little late and hoping the next few lights stay green just a bit longer. Maybe you have extra time to stop for your favorite coffee. But maybe, just maybe, you also have the time to save a life.
Duncan Elston woke up like any other day. He put on his shoes not knowing they would soon carry him straight into danger.
Leaves swirled beneath Elston’s car as morning traffic moved along busy Chesterfield streets. What began as a routine Tuesday took a turn when he noticed something out of the ordinary.
Smoke.

Log on to See Webkinz!
Who doesn't love Webkinz? Our Webkinz would love to find herself a new home after being neglected and then abandoned by her previous owner. Understandably, she can be a little shy when you first meet her, but she warms up fast when offering some tasty treats! This girl loves to spend time outside, especially if she has someone to play fetch with her! She also enjoys a good cuddle on the couch with her person. Webkinz did well meeting another dog at the shelter, but she'd probably do best with a calmer dog in a calmer environment to help her gain confidence. Webkinz is a 1-year-old spayed female pitbull mix weighing about 52lbs.
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.
