In February 2024, Hope Lampley had just completed a long-term missionary assignment and was working as live-in caregiver for a family in Chester. One afternoon, she went to the credit union at Virginia State University to reopen her account and noticed a flyer from Maggie Walker Community Land Trust looking for first-time homebuyers interested in purchasing a new house at Ettrick Landing, an affordable single-family subdivision under construction in southern Chesterfield.
The houses at Ettrick Landing are all single-story, ranging in size from 1,300- to 1,700-square-feet, and are affordable for households earning approximately 65% of Chesterfield’s area median income.
Lampley was one of more than 100 people who expressed interest in purchasing a home in the new subdivision. More than 80 showed up at an open house for the first completed residence. All 10 houses had an accepted offer within 60 days of being finished and each was purchased by a first-time homebuyer.
